This slideshow is on the important components of college level synthesis writing with a thesis statement. It also goes over three part source integration to help students incorporate quotes in a thoughtful, proper way.

This presentation is used to introduce students to how to quote text when completing the text-dependent analysis response on a standardized test. 

Students are asked to write a letter to the editor of their newspaper to explain their point of view as a seller in a market that is about to experience an increased sales tax rate.

Principles of economics students are asked to collect and analyze data on a few macro economic aggregates to give them a first taste of empirical work.

Before engaging in lessons, students attempt to draw a diagram of a nitrogen cycle and add as many components as they can. This allows them to self-assess (and the teacher to assess) what they know about the nitrogen cycle.

Students research some of the nitrogen cycle components online at various websites or read printouts from websites provided by the teacher. They choose three or four facts of interest about their component and report to the rest of the class.

Each small group of students is given a set of materials including 20 objects, 20 picture-cards, 20 nitrogen cycle component explanation cards, 20 title cards for each nitrogen cycle component, heading cards for different environments such as the atmosphere, soil, water, etc., and many small arrows. The students work together to pair each object with its corresponding title card, description card, and picture card. Then these are all arranged to form a possible nitrogen cycle with various components clustered around heading cards and arrows used to show movement of nitrogen from one object to another.

Students then write humorous (limerick, couplet) poems or more serious poems (haiku) or structured poems (cinquain, diamante) to tell several facts about a component of the nitrogen cycle. They share their poems with the class.
Students may also engage in experiments with nitrogen fertilizer.

This seminar is open to graduate students, and is intended to offer a synoptic view of selected methodologies and thinkers in art and architectural history (with many theorists from other fields). The syllabus outlines the structure of the course and the readings and assignments for each week; the goal is to become aware of the apparatuses of discourse, and find your own voice within them.

The Third Grade Elementary Framework for Science and Integrated Subjects, Weather, uses the phenomena of extreme weather events.  It is part of Elementary Framework for Science and Integrated Subjects project, a statewide Clime Time collaboration among ESD 123, ESD 105, North Central ESD, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Development of the resources is in response to a need for research- based science lessons for elementary teachers that are integrated with English language arts, mathematics and other subjects such as social studies. The template for Elementary Science and Integrated Subjects  can serve as an organized, coherent and research-based roadmap for teachers in the development of their own NGSS aligned science lessons.  Lessons can also be useful for classrooms that have no adopted curriculum as well as to serve as enhancements for  current science curriculum. The EFSIS project brings together grade level teams of teachers to develop lessons or suites of lessons that are 1) pnenomena based, focused on grade level Performance Expectations, and 2) leverage ELA and Mathematics Washington State Learning Standards.

This Remote Learning Plan was created by Joanna Pruitt as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.*I have remixed this lesson to use for a 9-12 grade research paper class. The only changes I made were to break it up into smaller sections (Topic Selection and Brainstorming) in order to fit it into our course schedule. 

This course provides broad exposure to research in biophysics and physical biology, with emphasis on the critical evaluation of scientific literature. Weekly meetings include in-depth discussion of scientific literature led by various MIT faculty on active research topics. Each session also includes a brief discussion of non-research topics including effective presentation skills, writing papers and fellowship proposals, choosing scientific and technical research topics, time management, and scientific ethics.

This Lesson Plan was created by Molly Simpson. The attached Lesson Plan is designed for Grade 3 English Language Arts students. Students will understand and use 3rd grade level vocabulary, use creative thinking skills to write a short story, proofread and edit their own work, and publish a final copy of their written work. The Lesson Plan addresses the following NDE Standards: NE.LA 3.2.1.D, NE.LA 3.2.1.H, NE.LA 3.2.1.J, and NE.LA 3.2.2.D. It is expected that this Lesson Plan will take students about 120 minutes to complete. 

 The lesson is designed for Grade 5 English Language Arts students to review the four types of sentences: exclamatory, declarative, interrogative, imperative. This lesson addresses the following NDE Standard: NE LA 5.1.4.a, NE LA 5.1.4.b.It is expected that this lesson will take students 60 minutes to complete.
