"I never knew a whole family to live together, till all were grown up, in my life," recalls Lewis Clarke of his twenty-five years enslaved in Kentucky.1 Families were separated due to sale, escape, early death from poor health, suicide, and murder by a slaveholder, overseer, slave patroller, or other dominant person. Separation also occurred within the plantation itself, e.g., by segregating "field slaves" from "house servants," removing children from parents to live together with a slave caretaker, or bringing children fathered by the slaveholder to live in the "Big House." How, then, did the slave family provide solace and identity? "What the family does, and what the family did for African Americans," writes historian Deborah White Gray, "was create a world outside of the world of work. It allowed for significant others. It allowed a male slave to be more than just a brute beast. It allowed him to be a father, to be a son. It allowed women to be mothers and to take on roles that were outside of that of a slave, of a servant."2 When did the enslaved child realize how his or her family life differed from the slave-holder's? How did enslaved adults cope with the forced disintegration of their families? Here we read a collection of texts—two letters, a memoir, and interview excerpts—to consider these questions.

Students will be introduced to Environmental Crime and Law.  Students will consider critical questions such as, why study environmental harm?  Should these harms be considered crimes?  Furthermore, where might criminal justice and environmental degradation intersect?  A theoretical foundation will be surveyed as well as a short historical analysis of environmental movements.  The course will then turn toward looking at Environmental Crime Investigation, which organizations and databases are used for data collection, and some future issues and challenges that may emerge.

Enzymes are biocatalyst they accelerate the chemical reaction. They are organic, all enzymes are made of protein but not all enzymes are protein. Certain biological reactions can be catalyzed by RNA called Ribozyme. Protein is a dynamic molecule; its activity depends on the three-dimensional structure. For example, the water droplet size gets flexible, if you touch. Protein folding and three-dimensional structures are vital for activity.  There is no living cell without an enzyme, in the living cell; it functions to accelerate the biological reaction. There is a misfolded protein infectious agent called Prion, which causes normal brain protein to misfold which, leads to neurodegratative disease. This module presents concise notes of enzyme basic concepts; bioinformatics tools and few examples of enzymes in everyday life.

"EVALUATION, VALUES, ENHANCEMENT"The Project involved 2 general education high schools, the Italian coordinator, and a Finnish partner: both have improved the quality of their provisions for learners through on-site (six) and virtual mobilities (two) for pupils and staff, increasing their ability to work in the framework of international projects. It has directly involved 100 people. The Project offered the opportunity:to reinforce the relevance of cooperation in an international context;to raise awareness of European citizenship and values;to share good practices.

Essential Mechanics - Statics and Strength of Materials with MATLAB and Octave
P. Venkataraman

Essential Mechanics - Statics and Strength of Materials with MATLAB and Octave combines two core engineering science courses - “Statics” and “Strength of Materials” - in mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineering. It weaves together various essential topics from Statics and Strength of Materials to allow discussing structural design from the very beginning. The traditional content of these courses are reordered to make it convenient to cover rigid body equilibrium and extend it to deformable body mechanics. The e-book covers the most useful topics from both courses with computational support through MATLAB/Octave. The traditional approach for engineering content is emphasized and is rigorously supported through graphics and analysis. Prior knowledge of MATLAB is not necessary. Instructions for its use in context is provided and explained. It takes advantage of the numerical, symbolic, and graphical capability of MATLAB for effective problem solving. This computational ability provides a natural procedure for What if? exploration that is important for design. The book also emphasizes graphics to understand, learn, and explore design. The idea for this book, the organization, and the flow of content is original and new. The integration of computation, and the marriage of analytical and computational skills is a new valuable experience provided by this e-book. Most importantly the book is very interactive with respect to the code as it appears along with the analysis.

This math problem determines the areas of simple and complex planar figures using measurement of mass and proportional constructs. Materials are inexpensive or easily found (poster board, scissors, ruler, sharp pencil, right angle), but also requires use of an analytical balance (suggestions are provided for working with less precise weighing tools). This resource is from PUMAS - Practical Uses of Math and Science - a collection of brief examples created by scientists and engineers showing how math and science topics taught in K-12 classes have real world applications.
