Because of their diverse literacy needs, our students need us to differentiate the product, process and content of learning according to their learning style, interest and readiness. Yet, recognizing student growth and literacy needs requires more than one voice and more than one snapshot. Research has reminded us of the value of continued assessment and of students as partners in their own assessment. This heightened metacognition leads to increased engagement across content areas and remains a key characteristic of life-long learning. Motivation to learn increases when students are asked to critically analyze their own learning. And, if continued assessment informs instruction, students and teachers benefit from student feedback about what a student does and does not understand.

This OER, Student Self-Assessment: Future Career Plans, was created by Ashton Krueger, Hector Eslava, and Jill Camargo as part of the 2024 World Language OER Summer work and training. Educators worked with Chrystal Liu, Nick Ziegler, and Dorann Avey to create OER Learning Plans and materials.The attached Lesson Plan is designed for 9 - 12 World Language Arts teachers for Novice Learners of German. Students will use the same self-assessment assignment at the beginning and end of the unit to help gauge their growth. This Lesson Plan addresses the following NDE World Language Standard(s): 1.5, 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 5.1, and 5.2. It is expected that this assignment will take 20 minutes to complete.

For self-assessment, single-choice SCQ and multiple-choice MCQ questionnaires are not very user-friendly. Three other types of more playful activities are: - Drag-and-drop on an image exercises which allow learners to check if they can orient themselves in a sketch or graph. They work by simple drag and drop - Gap fill in texts with or without contextual images which require a little more concentration on the part of the learner, but are very fruitful in ensuring that difficult concepts are well understood - Categorization exercises which complement the previous two activities well: learners organize the elements into categories and thus learn to distinguish their characteristics

Weekly Self-Assessments were used in a Basic Math class to increase student accountability. Each week students rated themselves as to how well they completed assignments. The hope was that students would come to their weekly student-teacher conferences prepared to discuss their self-assessments, progress in math, and prepared to set goals for the following week. Data was taken quarterly on passing rates and on participation in student scheduled student-teacher conferences. Passing rates improved from 86% in quarter 1 to 100% in quarters 2 and 3. Participation in self-scheduled student-teacher conferences increased from 76% in quarter 1, to 82% in quarter 2, to 92% in quarter 3. Teachers may use the Google Survey example to create your own: one that is customized to your class. You may make a copy of the Basic Math Weekly Self-Evaluation, change the name, and alter it to meet your needs. Making your own copy will give you access to your survey answers.
