Students learn about complex networks and how to use graphs to represent them. They also learn that graph theory is a useful part of mathematics for studying complex networks in diverse applications of science and engineering, including neural networks in the brain, biochemical reaction networks in cells, communication networks, such as the internet, and social networks. Students are also introduced to random processes on networks. An illustrative example shows how a random process can be used to represent the spread of an infectious disease, such as the flu, on a social network of students, and demonstrates how scientists and engineers use mathematics and computers to model and simulate random processes on complex networks for the purposes of learning more about our world and creating solutions to improve our health, happiness and safety.

Kilmanagh Meadows involves a two-party negotiation between neighbours over a dispute relating to noise pollution, boundary walls, and maintenance costs. This simulation can also be adapted for use as a mediation simulation. This simulation is designed for teaching and learning at third level, and works best where students have some experience and knowledge of negotiation and/or alternative dispute resolution (mediation).Kilmanagh Meadows allows students to move away from positional bargaining towards creating opportunities for mutual gain and value creation. Maintaining the relationship is a key concern for both parties, and students may choose to prioritise this in the negotiation. Photosynthesis is a process by which plants synthesize glucose and oxygen in presence of sunlight through light dependent reactions by utilization of sunlight, water to synthesize oxygen, ATP and NADPH and light-independent reactions to synthesize carbon dioxide and carbohydrates. Cellular respiration is a metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose through glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, citric acid / Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. Primary producers produce energy and consumers derive energy from primary producers. Primary productivity is the accumulation of energy in form of biomass. Integrating biological science and mathematics helps to understand how differential regulation of factors impacting metabolic pathways and processes impact primary productivity.

This course is about maneuvering motions of surface and underwater vehicles. Topics covered include: derivation of equations of motion, hydrodynamic coefficients, memory effects, linear and nonlinear forms of the equations of motion, control surfaces modeling and design, engine, propulsor, and transmission systems modeling and simulation during maneuvering. The course also deals with stability of motion, principles of multivariable automatic control, optimal control, Kalman filtering, and loop transfer recovery. We will also explore applications chosen from autopilots for surface vehicles; towing in open seas; and remotely operated vehicles.

Modelling is about understanding the nature: our world, ourselves and our work. Everything that we observe has a cause (typically several) and has the effect thereof. The heart of modelling lies in identifying, understanding and quantifying these cause-and-effect relationships.

A model can be treated as a (selective) representation of a system. We create the model by defining a mapping from the system space to the model space, thus we can map system state and behaviour to model state and behaviour. By defining the inverse mapping, we may map results from the study of the model back to the system. In this course, using an overarching modelling paradigm, students will become familiar with several instances of modelling, e.g., mechanics, thermal dynamics, fluid mechanics, etc.

First-time visitors can check out one of the Featured Simulations to get started. The homepage contains a number of curriculum modules which deal with chemical bonding, semiconductors, and diffusion. Visitors can learn how to create their own simulations via the online manual, which is available here as well. The Articles area is quite helpful, as it contains full-text pieces on nanoscience education, quantum chemistry, and a primer on how transistors work. A good way to look over all of the offerings here is to click on the Showcase area. Here visitors can view the Featured simulations, or look through one of five topical sections, which include Biotech and Nanotechnology. Visitors will need to install the free Molecular Workbench software, which is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac.
