This is a challenge based activity in which students use augmented reality and trial and error in order to determine how changes to a quadratic equation affect the shape of a parabola. Students use the Geogebra AR app to manipulate equations and change the parabola to fit around a physical object.

Beginning Algebra Student Workbook, is based upon Introductory Algebra Student Workbook, Sixth Edition, 2016, by Scottsdale Community College. The content is designed to lead students through Beginning Algebra. After briefly reviewing prealgebra tools, we develop the key concepts and skills associated with linear and quadratic functions, maintaining a modeling approach throughout, with emphasis on conceptual understanding and applications. The workbook assumes the knowledge of prealgebra. Access to a basic calculator is assumed and the use of one is required for some of the examples in the lessons and exercises .

This course is also intended to provide the student with a strong foundation for intermediate algebra and beyond. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: simplify and solve linear equations and expressions including problems with absolute values and applications; solve linear inequalities; find equations of lines; and solve application problems; add, subtract, multiply, and divide various types of polynomials; factor polynomials, and simplify square roots; evaluate, simplify, multiply, divide, add, and subtract rational expressions, and solve basic applications of rational expressions. This task presents a simple but mathematically interesting game whose solution is a challenging exercise in creating and reasoning with algebraic inequalities. The core of the task involves converting a verbal statement into a mathematical inequality in a context in which the inequality is not obviously presented, and then repeatedly using the inequality to deduce information about the structure of the game.

This task provides an exploration of a quadratic equation by descriptive, numerical, graphical, and algebraic techniques. Based on its real-world applicability, teachers could use the task as a way to introduce and motivate algebraic techniques like completing the square, en route to a derivation of the quadratic formula.

This task is for instructional purposes only and builds on ``Building an explicit quadratic function.''

This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students are able to create and solve linear equations. In particular, the lesson will help you identify and help students who have the following difficulties: solving equations with one variable and solving linear equations in more than one way.

The emphasis in this task is on the progression of equations, from two that involve different values of the sales tax, to one that involves the sales tax as a parameter. It is designed to foster the habit of looking for regularity in solution procedures, so that students don't approach every equation as a new problem but learn to notice familiar types.

Many students are motivated by real world applications of mathematics, and most students are familiar with the term CGI from watching movies and playing video games. This particular activity ties matrix multiplication to CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). It has been used successfully with high school students in an Algebra II course who had just learned how to do matrix multiplication, middle school and high school students (some of whom were seeing matrix multiplication for the first time) attending a special Math Day on a university campus, and with College Algebra students (during a unit about matrices).
