In 1995, at the age of 29, a woman presented with headache and visual disturbances. She was found to have a capillary hemangioblastoma of the brainstem, which was then resected and pathologically confirmed. The diagnosis of von Hippel-Lindau disease was suspected at this time. One year later, she presented with worsening headache, nausea, vertigo, photophobia, and episodes of unresponsiveness. CT and MRI revealed a 4 cm mass in the right cerebellar hemisphere with effacement and displacement of the fourth ventricle. A VP shunt was placed semi-emergently, and two days later she underwent a second craniotomy for tumor resection. The diagnosis of hemangioblastoma was once again confirmed. In 2004, follow-up MRI of the brain and spine revealed multiple brainstem and cervical and thoracic cord lesions consistent with hemangioblastomas. An abdominal scan showed cystic kidneys with bilateral enhancing heterogeneous renal masses, suspicious for malignancy, as well as multiple pancreatic cysts and a paraaortic nodule of possible left adrenal origin; however a bone scan was normal. It is unclear whether or not the patient was treated for the presumed renal cell carcinoma at this time. In 2007, the then 41-year-old patient presented with a three-day history of falls and disequilibrium, progressive quadriparesis and difficulty swallowing. An MRI of the brain was performed. Axial T2 (Figure 1) and contrast enhanced T1-weighted (Figure 2) images showed a partially cystic (thick arrow) enhancing cerebellar mass, dorsal to the fourth ventricle. Extensive T2 hyperintensity was present in the pons, medulla (thin arrows) and middle cerebellar peduncles. Sagittal unenhanced (Figure 3) and contrast enhanced (Figure 4) T1-weighted images showed a markedly enhancing (black arrowhead) solid mass inferior to the fourth ventricle. Nodular leptomeningeal enhancement on the anterior surface of the pons was consistent with a leptomeningeal tumor. The patient underwent a posterior fossa craniotomy with gross total resection of the mass in April 2007.

A 55-year-old woman presented with bilateral hip and rib pain. A chest radiograph revealed multiple bilateral rib fractures with callus formation. Insufficiency fractures of the right superior and inferior pubic rami and ischium and possibly of the sacrum were noted on hip and pelvic radiographs, and a subsequent MRI showed avascular necrosis of the left femoral head. Laboratory studies demonstrating hypophosphatemia, in combination with the patient's clinical presentation of osteomalacia, prompted further investigation for the underlying cause.

A 6 year old girl from Medellin, Colombia, South America, presented with twenty-five days of left-sided headache, vomiting, and episodes of syncope lasting roughly five seconds. The patient had no other medical history of significance. She had no café au lait spots, and no other tumors or masses in other body sites. Neurological examination revealed no focal deficits. An MRI scan showed a large intra-axial left parietal lobe mass with significant surrounding edema. The mass did not appear to originate from the dura; it did reach or breach the pia on the parietal convexity, and medially close to the falx. The falx was pushed by the mass effect of the tumor and was clearly separate from it. (Fig 1). A surgical excision was done in Colombia, and a tentative diagnosis made. The slides and selected blocks were sent to the University of Missouri for consultation. Since the time of surgery, the patient has been treated with radiation (thirty treatments) and has done extremely well. Neurologically she is almost completely normal, and her mother reports that the patient is asymptomatic and leading a normal life attending school.

Principles of Microeconomics is an adaptation of the textbook, Microeconomics: Markets, Methods, and Models by D. Curtis and I. Irvine, which provides concise yet complete coverage of introductory microeconomic theory, application and policy in a Canadian and global environment. This adaptation employs methods that use equations sparingly and do not utilize calculus. The key issues in most chapters are analyzed by introducing a numerical example or case study at the outset. Students are introduced immediately to the practice of taking a data set, examining it numerically, plotting it, and again analyzing the material in that form. The end-of-chapter problems involve numerical and graphical analysis, and a small number of problems in each chapter involve solving simple linear equations (intersecting straight lines). However, a sufficient number of questions is provided for the student to test understanding of the material without working through that subset of questions. This textbook is intended for a one-semester course, and can be used in a two-semester sequence with the companion textbook, Principles of Macroeconomics. The three introductory chapters are common to both textbooks.

This is a human interest and science story that documents from firsthand accounts and artifacts the historical context and scientific events relevant to an important collaborative Fast Plant investigation on the MIR Space Station. The project coincided with pivotal historical events and involved many scientists, teachers, and students in the Ukraine and the US. The project was called the Collaborate Ukraine Experiment, and this story was written explicitly to present in an interesting way to students and teachers how engineering practices--as well as science practices--are important in the life sciences.

Background Sharing research data provides benefit to the general scientific community, but the benefit is less obvious for the investigator who makes his or her data available. Principal Findings We examined the citation history of 85 cancer microarray clinical trial publications with respect to the availability of their data. The 48% of trials with publicly available microarray data received 85% of the aggregate citations. Publicly available data was significantly (p = 0.006) associated with a 69% increase in citations, independently of journal impact factor, date of publication, and author country of origin using linear regression. Significance This correlation between publicly available data and increased literature impact may further motivate investigators to share their detailed research data.
