Magma composition is an important control on the geomorphology of lava flows and volcanoes. In this exercise, students investigate this relationship by studying several classic examples of diverse volcano types in the western United States. Students use the interactive Google Earth software to determine the size and shape of the selected volcanoes, and then use the North American Volcanic and Intrusive Database (NAVDAT) to gather whole-rock geochemical data to test the nature of the relationship between magma composition and volcano geomorphology.

Before completing this computer-based activity, students need to learn basic (Earth Science 101) information about volcanic rocks and hazards, and they also need to learn how to interpret a histogram. Students complete the activity individually outside class time in a computer lab equipped with Arcview3.3 geographic information system (GIS) software. They do not need any prior experience with GIS because the activity text includes step-by-step instructions accompanied by numerous screen shots. Students use the GIS to investigate geochemical data from the global Earthchem database and, for the Mount Hood, Oregon area, the NAVDAT database. Students also use maps and satellite images to learn about volcanic hazards at Mount Hood. Through all of these investigations, they learn about the connections between the silica content of a melt, volcanic hazards, and plate tectonics. Hundreds of students have successfully completed the activity at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN, but the activity is still considered a "beta test copy" and the author welcomes feedback. Funding has been provided by small grants from the NASA Earth Observing System Higher Education Alliance ("GeoBrain"), Tennessee Space Grant, and NSF.

This lesson was developed to give participants an understanding of Earth's water cycle. In this one-hour long activity, students participate in a webquest to learn about the water cycle, and then build a mini-model of the water cycle to observe how water moves through Earth's four systems. The activity uses the 5E instructional model and is part of the "Survivor Earth" series of one-hour lessons.

Using the work of Faculty and Professional Learning Community, this tool will help drive the discussions, gain input and help provide data for the High School Redesign project that is beginning at Grant Wood AEA. It will help define what student success will look like in this project as we are moving from a traditional high school setting to a program that will meet the needs of today's students and prepare the every changing society and work place that they will be entering.

This Faculty and Professional Learning Community (FPLC) sought to identify and analyze various conceptions of what is meant by the ubiquitous higher education phrase “student success.” Despite the phrase “student success” being used indiscriminately in numerous policies and initiatives, our research indicates that definitions of student success remain amorphous, ambiguous, and highly contextual. Our FPLC worked to identify and examine the extent of misaligned definitions in order to promote a more cohesive conversation about our universally stated goal of student success. While identifying a universal definition of "student success" may be neither possible, nor desirable (and was thus not our aim), efforts to identify and explore interpretations are productive for illuminating the complexities and nuances of a meaningful phrase. To further this goal, we placed special emphasis on eliciting student voices and notions of what their own success looked and felt like.

This lesson plan is a PBL (problem based learning) project. The students first took a survey to grab their attention, which informed them of their sleeping habits. Then the students began researching the question, "what factors are needed in order to get a good night's sleep?". The students will read a Time for Kids article, as well as research other articles, to discover new information about the topic. Based on what they learned, they will create an informative Piktochart that will be presented in class, displayed at the school fair, and hung around the school. Their final projects will ultimately help other students to achieve better sleeping habits!

This publication contains the results of an easy to read survey to discover which kind of easy to understand information people with learning disability/low literacy skills need. The survey involved twenty people from each of the following 6 European Countries: Italy, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Spain. People with low literacy skills, with cognitive disabilities and refugees answered to the questionnaire showing an international view about people’s needs in terms of accessible information. The questionnaire was specially created by the partners of the project Accessible Information Material (an Erasmus+ strategic partnership for innovation coordinated by Associazione Uniamoci Onlus) and adapted to the specific target of people which the organizations are most concerned with.

Writing a Wikipedia article about a genetic disease is a good culminating activity for a genetics course or module, as it requires synthesizing and interpreting a wide range of genetic information. This assignment also includes a potential service component, which is normally very difficult in genetics.
