Teaching the "Information Creation as a Process" Framework through Video Gaming
Unrestricted Use

Rating

he Inheritance is a video game that uses storytelling to teach the ACRL framework Information Creation as a process. The game can be an engaging way for librarians to teach the abstract concept. The objective is not only about reaching the end of the game safely, but also, about gathering the necessary items along the way to solve the mystery. You will have a checklist of items that you must gather in order to make it through the game. We used Twine, an application made for game creation, to visualize our concept. This game gets quite complex as you go, so it is recommended that you keep a piece of paper on hand to track your progress. Also, if you do not make it through the game on your first play-through, it is recommended that you try again! Finally, if you choose to listen to the narration clips throughout the game, it enhances the immersive experience. Overall, have fun playing our game! The goal was to allow the user to enjoy the process, rather than putting so much emphasis on reaching the end. Now you can simply download the zip file, open it, and click on index.html. Created by students in ISI 6372 Information Literacy at the University of Ottawa, Winter 2020.

Three Number Sense Activities

Game 1: Contig Game: This game challenges and extends the number sense experience students have gained from writing equivalent mathematical expressions for target numbers. Game 2: The 24 Game builds on students' ability to find equivalent names for numbers. Game 3: In Tribulation, students must search the game-board for 3 numbers in a row (vertically, horizontally or diagonally as in a word search) that combine to make the target number. In this game, however, there is a prescribed formula for combining the numbers. Students must multiply the first two numbers then add or subtract the third number to produce the target number.

Tools of the Trade

This OLogy activity offers kids a fun way to get firsthand knowledge of how archaeologists find lost sites. In Tools of the Trade, kids are given six cartoon frames, each illustrating a problem the archaeology team faced in locating a lost mission on St. Catherines Island. When kids select a frame, they are given details about the problem; they are then asked to pick which tool they think helped the team solve the problem. Each time they correctly identify a tool, they are given additional details of the story and the cartoon frame is "colored in." After correctly identifying the tools for all six cartoon frames, they have the option of printing a PDF of the full-color cartoon.
