This seminar will teach you about the Pythagorean Theorem. It will also teach you how to use the converse of the theorem and how to identify Pythagorean triples. You will have to apply the techniques you have learned to simplify radicals, and you will learn how to apply exponential properties. You will be shown visual demonstrations of the Pythagorean Theorem and be asked to connect them to the algebraic models of the Theorem.StandardsCC.2.3.8.A.3.Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems.

The Quadratics module is divided into 4 parts, including (1) solving by factoringm, (2) solving using the square root property and completing the square, (3) solving using the quadratic formula, and (4) solving by graphing. The goal is for students to recognize the strategies for solving quadratics, and even higher degree functions that can employ the same strategies. For each strategy there is a video page and then a practice homework page. The video pages include printable word documents that are the notes. Each video page is followed by a practice homework page in Derivita. This work, by Cheryl Meilbeck, is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.Links to an external site.CC-BY

Quadratic curve and graph display

An interactive applet that allows the user to graphically explore the properties of a quadratic equation. Specifically, it is designed to foster an intuitive understanding of the effects of changing the three coefficients in the function. The applet shows a large graph of a quadratic (ax^2 + bx +c) and has three slider controls, one each for the coefficients a,b and c. As the sliders are moved, the graph is redrawn in real time illustrating the effects of these variations. The roots of the equation are shown both graphically and numerically, including the case where the roots are imaginary. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

Context for Instructors
MTH 110

This unit is part of a class called Applied College Mathematics, a course developed specifically to serve students who need more algebra, statistics, and quantitative reasoning skills than a traditional “liberal arts” math class would offer them, but who do not need to take precalculus or calculus classes. Typical majors of students in this course include, but are not limited to:

Business
Criminal Justice
Community Health
Exercise Science
Interdisciplinary Studies
Psychology

Two of the course learning outcomes for Applied College Mathematics are:

Draw reasonable and appropriately qualified conclusions from quantitative analysis of real-world applications.
Understand the use of percent, proportions and rates in solving real-world problems.

Students will learn about the water cycle, watersheds, and point and non-point source pollution. Students will then apply this knowledge to take a position in the debate about the proposed development at Hawn's Bridge Peninsula at Raystown Lake and write a letter to the editor expressing their opinion. Pairs well with an Engineering Design Challenge or a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE).

This module is aimed at college freshmen, although it could be used with slightly older or slightly younger students.  Its purpose is to instruct students on the process of engaging with the kinds of text they are likely to encounter in their first year in college.  Included are an introduction that establishes a set of "rules" for reading text for main ideas and key concepts, a sample text drawn from an OER source, and a model of how to read the text.

Rectangle Area and Perimeter. (Coordinate Geometry)

An interactive applet and associated web page that show the definition and properties of a rectangle in coordinate geometry. The applet has a rectangle with draggable vertices. As the user re-sizes the rectangle the applet continuously recalculates its width, height and diagonals from the vertex coordinates. Rectangle can be rotated on the plane to show the more complex cases. The grid, coordinates and calculations can be turned on and off for class problem solving. The applet can be printed in the state it appears on the screen to make handouts. The web page has a full definition of a rectangle when the coordinates of the points defining it are known, and has links to other pages relating to coordinate geometry. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector.
