Awareness of ADHD in primary care: stakeholder perspectives

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Background Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is underdiagnosed in many European countries and the process of accessing care and diagnosis is complex and variable. In many countries, general practitioners (GPs) refer on to secondary care where individuals receive an assessment and, if appropriate, a diagnosis and access to care. It is therefore essential that GPs have a clear understanding of the disorder and its care pathways. While previous studies have highlighted potential barriers in GPs’ ADHD awareness, this qualitative study aims to further explore individual stakeholders’ experiences. Methods Semi-structured interviews explored the views of multiple stakeholders- GPs (n=5), healthcare specialists (n=5) and patients (adults with ADHD n=5), (parents n=5) and with experience of the presentation and management of ADHD in primary care. These interviews were analysed using thematic analyses and following principles of grounded theory..."

BECCAL: The Bose-Einstein Condensate and Cold Atom Laboratory

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"A new addition to the International Space Station marks the beginning of exciting new explorations of exotic matter. This is BECCAL, the Bose-Einstein Condensate and Cold Atom Laboratory. A joint venture between NASA and the German Aerospace Center, BECCAL will enable scientists across the globe to eliminate one pesky force that plagues earthbound experiments: gravity. A Bose-Einstein condensate is a state of matter formed by cooling a gas of extremely low density to just above absolute zero. Systems like this enable scientists to study aspects of quantum mechanics on a relatively big scale, and could hold the key to bridging quantum mechanics to general relativity. Methods for generating Bose-Einstein condensates vary according to how they trap atoms, using either optics or magnets to do the trick. But typical experiments are hampered by the force of gravity. In a standard setup, gravity deforms optical and magnetic traps..."

Since we live in an urban environment with many trees, shrubs, and flower plantings this course is designed so that each student will always be able to walk down the street and have some familiarity with their environs. To that end, each student will learn to identify approximately 50-60 trees and shrubs and know them by their common name, scientific name and family, as well as some annuals and perennials commonly used as bedding plants. Students will learn some basic the botanical concepts, which are used in, plant identification, such as botanical structural features used in phylogeny and taxonomy of plants. In addition to this, students will get an overview of the ecological and economic aspects specific to urban botany.

BMPR2 inhibition activates lysosomes and promotes cell death in lung cancer cells

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Bone morphogenetic protein receptor 2 (BMPR2) is a member of an embryonic signaling cascade that is involved in lung development, but in mature tissue it plays key roles in both cancer and neurological disease. In cancer BMPR2 regulates cell survival signaling events independent of BMP type 1 receptors or the Smad-1/5 transcription factor. BMPR2 contributes to neurological disease when its signaling pathway is overactivated, and BMPR2 stabilizes microtubules. However, it is not yet known if BMPR2 regulates microtubules in cancer cells or what effect that would have on cell survival. To examine this, researchers recently inhibited BMPR2 signaling in lung cancer cell culture and found that it destabilized microtubules. This destabilization led to the activation of lysosomes, which then further decreased BMPR2 signaling. This likely sensitizes cancer cells to cell death via lysosomal permeability. These results demonstrate novel mechanisms by which BMPR2 regulates survival in cancer cells..."

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Although wildly popular among pet owners, brachycephalic dogs are predisposed to a number of respiratory problems. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, or BOAS , refers to a set of upper airway abnormalities that some dogs of these breeds can face. These can include a long soft palate and laryngeal collapse. Surgery can improve some of these issues if pet owners and veterinarians act at the first sign of trouble. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Most often, it’s only when breathing becomes problematic that action is taken—when these dogs are already at a high risk of complication or even death. How can pet owners and vets understand this risk before it’s too late? In a recent study, researchers report a 10-point scale they’ve devised to do just that. It’s called the brachycephalic risk—or BRisk—score..."
