In this dynamic data science game, students try to track down a speck of extremely dangerous radioactive material (the "source"), which has been lost somewhere in the middle of their lab. A special device measures the strength of the radiation and, if it’s positioned correctly over the speck, can be used to collect it for safe disposal. But it's a tiny speck, so they have to give quite precise coordinates. They take measurements to figure out the speck’s location, but must beware: as they take measurements, they're also accumulating radiation exposure. If they get too much, they’ll lose the game and will have to start over. Can they find the source before it’s too late? Using mathematical models, students generate useful strategies for winning the game with data.

Diffusion models generate images. Diffusion AI converts an image to noise, and trains an AI to reverse the process. In this lesson, students learn how AI can generate images, then explore a diffusion AI widget. Finally, the class wraps up with a discussion about whether or not these models are creative.

This lesson can be taught on its own, or as part of a 7-lesson sequence on How AI Works. Duration: 45 minutes

Half way through the second semester of our year-long integrated Sed/Strat and Structure course we travel to Sheep Mountain, Wyoming where the students spend 5 days describing and measuring section and the constructing geologic and structural maps. The field data gathered then form the basis for a paper titled: "Geologic History of the Sheep Mountain Region". In addition to simply making geologic maps, stratigraphic sections and structural cross-sections, the students have to put the local geology into the broader contexts of the Big Horn Basin and sequences of western orogenies.

Geometric probabilities, and probabilities in general, allow us to guess how long we'll have to wait for something to happen. Today, we'll discuss how they can be used to figure out how many Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans you could eat before getting the dreaded vomit flavored bean, and how they can help us make decisions when there is a little uncertainty - like getting a Pikachu in a pack of Pokémon Cards! We'll finish off this unit on probability by taking a closer look at the Birthday Paradox (or birthday problem) which asks the question: how many people do you think need to be in a room for there to likely be a shared birthday? (It's likely much fewer than you would expect!)

Geometric and Kinematic Analysis in a Sandbox

In this lab, students work in groups with a simple sandbox (metal sheets clamped to an adjustable workbench) to create thrust faults, strike-slip faults, or restraining and releasing bends on strike-slip faults. The sandboxes are designed without colored sand layers or vertical sides; they they show surface deformation rather than cross-sections, but also allow students to re-set the models and run them several times with either the same or different conditions. The models are recorded and shared with the class. Students make geometric models (sketches of the surface, using structural map symbols), guess possible cross-sections, and use the videos to develop kinematic models (sketches with arrows showing movement, and short descriptions of their kinematic observations). After making their observations, students measure properties of their materials, do scaling calculations, and compare their models with real examples of similar settings on Google Earth.

In this problem set the students use two different equations to calculate a conductive geothermal gradient using a spreadsheet program like Excel. Once they have the geothermal gradient plotted, they are asked to experiment with and comment on the model by changing parameters (e.g. mantle heat flow, thermal conductivity). There is a mix of specific, fill in the blank questions and open-ended questions. This problem set helps develop quantitative problem solving skills using a spreadsheet as a tool, and forces students to think about thermal constraints during igneous and metamorphic processes.

This is a teaching module, directed to undergraduate students in applied mathematics, that presents a Zonal Energy Balance Model to describe the evolution of the latitudinal distribution of Earth's surface temperature subject to incremental levels of cumulative carbon emissions in the atmosphere. A strategy to avert "dangerous levels" of global warming is imbedded in the model. Students working with the module will write a computer code, using a software such as MATLAB or Mathematica, to obtain numerical solutions of the model and simulate strategies that guarantee controlled levels of global warming.

Course Overview:
This course covers the basic statistical principles, procedures, and interpretations of statistical analyses in the behavioral sciences in order to provide an understanding of what is involved in analyzing quantitative data. The course will offer introductory coverage of descriptive and inferential statistics through the use of RStudio. Course topics include data description, central tendency and variability, statistical inference, and significance tests to compare means and conduct analyses of correlation and regression.

Student Learning Objectives:
Through the successful completion of this course, students will:
1) Develop knowledge and critical understanding of fundamental issues related to methodology and the application of various statistical tools.
2) Develop basic skills in using RStudio for data entry, data management, and data analysis.
3) Learn to appropriately interpret the output of statistical software and analyses and to communicate effectively with others regarding results and conclusions.
4) Be able to identify key information in published quantitative research manuscripts.
5) Be prepared to take more advanced statistics courses, such as analysis of variance and multiple regression models.
