This exercise is about visualizing and analyzing radar reflectivity data for a hurricane event using GIS. Radar, an acronym for radio detection and ranging, is an active remote sensor that uses radio waves to determine the range, altitude, direction of movement, and speed of objects. NEXRAD (Next Generation Weather Radar) system currently collects data at 160 sites throughout the United States. Students will visualize and export Level-II base reflectivity product from one of the NEXRAD sites: Wilmington, NC for the date of September 14, 2018, the date Hurricane Florence hit the state.

How does energy flow in and out of our atmosphere? Explore how solar and infrared radiation enters and exits the atmosphere with an interactive model. Control the amounts of carbon dioxide and clouds present in the model and learn how these factors can influence global temperature. Record results using snapshots of the model in the virtual lab notebook where you can annotate your observations.

This assignment pairs studies in environmental humanities with outdoor activity. Students complete a "field excursion" (gardening, hiking, environmental restoration) and reflect on sensory experiences involved in that activity to critique rationalist traditions/Cartesian legacies in their education more broadly.

In this field exercise for an introductory environmental science course, students investigate plant cover and type in a riparian area using transects. The final assignment is a lab report that includes a summary data table, a graph of cover types along their transect and an analysis of riparian health.

This is an in-class activity where students learn about the interconnectedness of land use, water quality, and water resource management. Students are assigned a river front parcel of land to develop, unaware that each parcel is connected to someone else's parcel. Each team presents their development choices to the class and learns that all of the river sections are contiguous, leading to discussions about the effects of development and downstream water quality issues.
