Psychological Adjustment Textbook

PSY 101 Psychology of Human Relations

Psychology of Human Relations is the study of psychology from a living or personal point of view with emphasis on practical application. Attention is given to individual and group dynamics with focus on feelings and attitudes in relation to family, work and day-to-day experiences. The course includes an overview of topics including self-concept, perception, self-awareness, personality, values and communications in resolving interpersonal conflicts.

The following text was created as part of an Open Oregon grant to promote the creation and use of
Open Educational Resources for college students. The Mt Hood Community College version of
“Psychological Adjustment” differs from the original text created by Tori Kearns and Deborah Lee at
East Georgia State College in the following ways. First, content revisions were made in existing
learning modules to better suit the needs of our department. Specifically, we removed the modules X.
Understanding Gender, and XII. Loneliness and Solitude. Significant revisions were made to the
modules on Stress, Communication, and Work/Choosing a Career with updated graphics and reading
materials. Second, the authors created learning objectives and keyword lists that coordinated with the
newly added materials. Finally, the authors made significant changes to how the materials were
presented in the text to increase student accessibility. In the original Kearns & Lee text, the learning
modules were populated with external links, some of which were broken or not available. Where
appropriate, the authors translated materials from external sources into a PDF version of the current
textbook, so that external links were no longer necessary to access the reading materials.

This subject examines the experiences of ordinary Chinese people as they lived through the tumultuous changes of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We look at personal narratives, primary sources, films alongside a textbook to think about how individual and family lives connect with the broader processes of change in modern China. In the readings and discussions, you should focus on how major political events have an impact on the characters’ daily lives, and how the decisions they make cause large-scale social transformation.

This advanced pronunciation course builds on a student’s basic understanding of the sounds and speech patterns of English with a focus on suprasegmental skills, such as stress, thought groups, intonation, linking, and phonological changes. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to apply the process of developing pronunciation skills and be able to identify and correct pronunciation problems in order to produce clearly understandable English in an academic setting.

One special feature is the inclusion of meaningful scripts and prompts for pronunciation diagnostics and practice that incorporate themes from Tema Okun’s descriptions of characteristics of white supremacy culture. These ideas, therefore, provide meaningful topics in which to explore our cultures and ourselves. They provide motivation for communication practice.

Selecting appropriate Technologies

Short Description:
The use of open education is growing and has become a global movement. Across much of North America, most post-secondary institutions are in the process of integrating the use of open education resources into their teaching and learning activities. The number of OER repositories from which instructors can draw resources continues to grow each year. The number of resources continues to grow along with the number of different tools used to develop these resources. There are a number of commercial and open source digital technologies available for the creation of open resources. This resource is intended to provide the OER community with a summary of some currently available tools for creating open content. OER creators need to know the range of tools that can be used in the creation process. This guide is designed to provide a starting point for instructors and faculty at post-secondary institutions. Prospective creators of OER can use the guide to pick the most appropriate tool for their specific context and level of technical expertise.

Book description: This is a text on elementary trigonometry, designed for students who have completed courses in high-school algebra and geometry. Though designed for college students, it could also be used in high schools. The traditional topics are covered, but a more geometrical approach is taken than usual. Also, some numerical methods (e.g. the secant method for solving trigonometric equations) are discussed. A brief tutorial on using Gnuplot to graph trigonometric functions is included.

There are 495 exercises in the book, with answers and hints to selected exercises.

This work is organized around vocabulary for 5 themes: Psychology, Wellness, Technology, Careers, and Oregon. Each theme has 2 units for a total of 10 units. Each unit contains 24 - 28 target vocabulary words. Other words that may be unfamiliar to students are glossed.

We use this material as our textbook for an intermediate vocabulary class for adult English language learners at our community college. This class meets for 2 hours per week, and we typically use 5 units per 10-week term.

Each unit contains multiple readings. If you are not teaching a vocabulary class, the readings and vocabulary work may be useful supplements in other classes.

Welcome to Maple Falls—Introduction to Reading, Writing, and Grammar for Adult ESOL Learners

This student textbook, teacher guide, and supplementary materials help support the development of Adult ESOL learners.

Welcome to Welcome to Maple Falls — Introduction to Reading, Writing, and Grammar for Adult ESOL Learners. Our goal in creating this book was to provide a more structured and grammatical beginning reading and writing book that was flexible enough to help students with no or limited literacy but also aid students with advanced literacy who just haven’t had much exposure to English, so they are at a beginning level.

We designed this book to follow experience-based learning principles, which rely heavily on using adults’ prior learning to increase the accessibility of learning and incorporate new learning. This means creating contexts, readings, activities, and learning opportunities that are immediately relevant to student situations. We see language as a tool to be used by students to achieve social, community, educational, and work-related goals. However, this is not survival English, but a learning informed by research that situates the learner at the center of learning and interacting with materials and classmates to improve their own lives and those of classmates. This type of learning creates self- directed learners and helps learners be ready for problem-solving and critical thinking in authentic situations.
