Students measure the relative intensity of a magnetic field as a function of distance. They place a permanent magnet selected distances from a compass, measure the deflection, and use the gathered data to compute the relative magnetic field strength. Based on their findings, students create mathematical models and use the models to calculate the field strength at the edge of the magnet. They use the periodic table to predict magnetism. Finally, students create posters to communicate the details their findings. This activity guides students to think more deeply about magnetism and the modeling of fields while practicing data collection and analysis. An equations handout and two grading rubrics are provided.

Making Sound-Reactive Clothing

Students apply sound-activated light-up EL wire to create personalized light-up clothing outfits. During the project, students become familiar with the components, code and logic to complete circuits and employ their imaginations to real-world applications of technology. Acting as if they are engineers, students are challenged to incorporate electroluminescent wire to regular clothing to make attention-getting safety clothing for joggers and cyclists. Luminescent EL wire stays cool, making it ideal to sew into wearable projects. They use the SparkFun sound detector and the EL sequencer circuit board to flash the EL wire to the rhythm of ambient sound, such as music, clapping, talking—or roadway traffic sounds! The combination of sensors, microcontrollers and EL wire enables a wide range of feedback and control options.

Oil spills have been a persistent problem since the start of the oil industry. Millions of wells and trillions of barrels of oil extracted have resulted in significant environmental impact. "A recently completed clinical trial of the oral drug eliglustat has delivered promising long-term results for adults with Gaucher disease type 1 – a rare and sometimes life-threatening genetic disorder that interferes with the breakdown of certain types of lipids. GD1 is caused by deficient activity of the lysosomal enzyme acid β-glucosidase. Reduced catalytic activity of the enzyme results in pathogenic accumulation of the enzyme’s substrates, primarily glucosylceramide, in various organs. The result is progressive and debilitating enlargement of the spleen and liver, anemia, low platelet counts, and skeletal manifestations. The historical standard of care is biweekly intravenous infusions of recombinant enzyme, which boosts degradation of glucosylceramide. By contrast, eliglustat, an oral substrate reduction therapy, reduces glucosylceramide storage by slowing its production..."

By bringing in a guest speaker to the classroom, having students create their own scenarios and responses, and having them write a letter to someone they want to thank for keeping them safe, this activity allows students to practice their writing and listening skills while learning an important real-life lesson about strangers at the same time.

"One of the key oncogenic drivers in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer is rearrangements to the anaplastic lymphoma kinase, or ALK, gene. Inhibitors of this gene have led to promising responses in patients, but the gene rearrangements complicate treatment efforts by facilitating the emergence of drug resistance. To help overcome this, researchers are turning to the drug ceritinib. Results from the recent phase 2 ASCEND-9 study showed that ceritinib can lead to effective treatment responses when similar drugs like alectinib stop working. Ceritinib is a selective oral ALK inhibitor that’s been approved for treating patients with metastatic ALK-positive non-small-cell lung cancer. The drug has demonstrated significant and meaningful improvements in progression-free survival in global phase 3 trials compared to chemotherapy. However, the efficacy and safety of ceritinib in patients who’ve grown resistant to the ALK inhibitor alectinib hasn’t been clear..."

"Molluscum contagiosum is a common skin infection caused by a poxvirus that primarily affects children. Currently there is no FDA-approved treatment for molluscum. Phase 3 clinical trials suggest that VP-102, a combination drug-device product, could be safe and effective for use in molluscum participants aged 2 or older. VP-102 is a shelf-stable, proprietary drug-device combination product containing a topical solution of the active ingredient cantharidin (a vesicant), along with acetone, gentian violet (a surgical dye), and denatonium benzoate (a bittering agent). Once the solution is applied to molluscum lesions, it dries to form a thin flexible film. VP-102 should be removed by washing with soap and water approximately 24 hours after treatment. Two randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled phase 3 trials named CAMP -1 and CAMP-2 were conducted to evaluate VP-102 in treating molluscum in participants 2 years or older..."

Principles of Chemistry I and II and Lab (SCI123 and SCI124), fulfills the chemistry requirement of biology, pharmacy, premed, prevet, engineering, or chemistry majors. It is expected that the student will go on to the second semester of this sequence Principles of Chemistry II (SCI124) or equivalent; SCI123 is not designed to be a one semester introductory course. This course is generally viewed as a science major introductory chemistry class. If your intended program of study is a physical science, pharmacy, pre-med/pre-vet, or engineering major this course is required. Laboratory work serves to reinforce concepts as well as introduce students to the scientific method, basic laboratory techniques, and the importance of safety in the laboratory environment.

Growers, packing centers, and retailers rely on one another to prevent contamination and keep consumers safe. Four animations illustrate how contamination can spread from field to table and suggest ways to avoid this. Applicable to various tree and ground fruits including cantaloupe, cucumbers, and strawberries, the animations follow the lifespan of an imaginary "purple fruit," highlighting danger points at each stage of the process and suggesting best practices for keeping produce free from contamination. Although the animations are brief, they include "Pause Points" (recommended spots to pause the video) where a presenter can discuss, distribute additional materials or reinforce learning during a training.

Students learn how biomedical engineers work with engineers and other professionals to develop dependable medical devices. Specifically, they learn about suction pumps, which are important devices to keep in good repair, especially when they are used in remote locations. Student teams brainstorm, sketch, design and create prototypes of suction pump protection devices to keep fluid from backing up and ruining the pump motors. Using a real suction pump, they conduct repeated trials to test their devices for reliability, making improvements as necessary.

After a car and pedestrian accident occurs near the local school, concerned students, parents, and neighbors launch a neighborhood safety project. Students consider potential hazards and then collect traffic and pedestrian data that might shed light on the situation. A survey is conducted to determine how children in the neighborhood travel between home and school, and students challenge their classmates to increase their use of human-powered (foot and pedal) transportation. Students use spreadsheets to enter and represent data, analyze their observations and survey data to determine the most significant problems, and study possible solutions. They develop a proposal for improving traffic safety, create slideshows and brochures, and present their ideas to the local city council.

This unit plan was originally developed by the Intel® Teach program as an exemplary unit plan demonstrating some of the best attributes of teaching with technology.
