This Earth Exploration Toolbook chapter uses ArcGIS and climate data from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Climate Change Scenarios GIS Data Portal to help users learn the basics of GIS-based climate modeling. The five-part exercise involves calculating summer average temperatures for the present day and future climate modeled output, visually comparing the temperature differences for the two model runs, and creating a temperature anomaly map to highlight air temperature increases or decreases around the world.

"Managing wastewater is a major logistical puzzle that impacts the environment, the climate, and public health. While metropolitan wastewater typically undergoes complex processing and sanitation, rural livestock wastewater is often simply composted for fertilizer, but composting can release harmful contaminants like ammonia, CO₂, and methane. One way to still capture the nutrients with fewer harmful byproducts is by cultivating microalgae, which actually absorb CO₂ via photosynthesis rather than producing it. But how do microalgae impact pathogens? A recent pilot study using raw piggery wastewater found that microalgae cultivation dramatically reduced the pathogen load while also triggering a dramatic shift in the overall bacterial community composition. Further investigation using the most abundant pathogen, Oligella, found that the microalgae weren’t impacting Oligella directly. Rather, microalgae cultivation reduced Oligella abundance through a network of other bacterial species..."

This e-learning package has been developed by Makarious Awad as part of his B.Med.Sci. project that was conducted in the Division of Public Health and Epidemiology in the University of Nottingham. This project was supervised by Drs. Heather Roberts and Puja Myles. Technical supervision was provided by Nicki Keating and the package was revised and edited for publication on UNOW by Dr. Sudhir Venkatesan.

2) Target Audience

The e-learning package was mainly aimed at undergraduate medical students, but assumes no prior knowledge on the topic. This makes it suitable for anyone with a basic understanding of public health principles and health education. Individuals from other disciplinary backgrounds wishing to gain a broad understanding of genocide and public health would also benefit from this e-learning package.

3) About Makarious

Makarious is a medical student at the University of Nottingham. He joined Medical School because of his passion for medicine and later became interested in Public Health. Makarious is a passionate advocate for increasing awareness of health inequalities and the recognition that human rights and health are inseparable. He recognises the role of Public Health in educating the public, health professionals and key policy makers on these issues.

"Pneumococcal bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae) can cause several different serious infections including pneumonia, sinusitis, and meningitis. Studies to monitor the levels of pneumococcal bacteria ‘carried’ by individuals are called carriage studies and are used to inform vaccination programs. But most carriage study techniques distinguish between pneumococcal subtypes based on their outside structure, or serotype, rather than by genetic strain. Consequently, little is known about strain-specific carriage and interactions between strains. To close this gap, researchers trialed a new workflow using single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing of the genetic marker plyNCR. Tests using mock bacterial communities found that this workflow was sensitive and highly specific to S. pneumoniae. Banked nasal swabs collected from infants during their first year of life were used for a real-world test..."

GEM4 Vision
GEM4 has brought together researchers and professionals in major institutions across the globe with distinctly different, but complementary, expertise and facilities to address significant problems at the intersections of select topics of engineering, life sciences, technology, medicine and public health.
GEM4 creates new models for interactions across scientific disciplinary boundaries whereby problems spanning the range of fundamental science to clinical studies and public health can be addressed on a global scale through strategic international partnerships.
Through initial focus areas in cell and molecular biomechanics, and environmental health, in the context of select human diseases, GEM4 creates a global forum for the definition and exploration of grand challenges and scientific studies, for the cross-fertilization of ideas among engineers, life scientists and medical professionals, and for the development of novel educational tools.
GEM4 Activities
GEM4 enables the brokering of engineers, life scientists and medical professionals with shared facilities and joint students and post-doctoral fellows to tackle major problems in the context of human health and diseases that call for state-of-the-art experimental and computational tools in cell and molecular mechanics, biology and medicine. Broad examples of problems addressed include:

infectious diseases such as malaria,
cancer,
cardiovascular diseases,
biomechanical origins of inflammation.

In each of these areas, the initial emphasis has included (but will not be limited to) molecular, subcellular and cellular mechanics applied to biomedicine, where a single investigator or institution is not likely to have the full spectrum of expertise, infrastructure or resources available to cover fundamental molecular science all the way to clinical studies and societal implications. Currently, twelve institutions in North America, Europe and Asia participate in this effort as Core institutions, focusing on mechanistic studies, as well as novel methods for diagnostics, vaccines or drug development and delivery.
Funds have been raised to provide a structure for coordinated studies from major organizations under the umbrella of GEM4. These funds are being used for:

organization of major symposia/conferences specifically targeted at the theme areas of the initiative,
training grants for student fellowships for the partner institutions,
summer schools to develop teaching materials,
the exchange of students and researchers,
operations of a central secretariat for handling the administrative and infrastructure details for such interactions,
maintenance of a web site for dissemination of information.

This is the Senate's health care bill. The bill started off with text regarding an unrelated matter but the Senate is co-opted this bill as a vehicle for passage of their reform and changed the text in whole to the health care bill. They do this because the Constitution requires all revenue bills to start in the House, and their health reform plan involves revenue. So they have chosen to work off of a bill that started in the House, even if that bill is unrelated.

This course is a collaborative offering of Sana, Partners in Health, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). The goal of this course is the development of innovations in information systems for developing countries that will (1) translate into improvement in health outcomes, (2) strengthen the existing organizational infrastructure, and (3) create a collaborative ecosystem to maximize the value of these innovations. The course will be taught by guest speakers who are internationally recognized experts in the field and who, with their operational experiences, will outline the challenges they faced and detail how these were addressed.
