This is a conversation class unit created using Google Slides. The lesson covers travel vocabulary and discussion activities as well as survival skills vocabulary and activities. The slides include lots of pictures and all the directions you will need to carry out these activities in your class. You can easily modify the slides by making your own copy of them.

As part of this nine to ten-lesson unit, students utilize news stories supported by the Pulitzer Center from Time for Kids and Mission Local to familiarize themselves with the concept of an underreported migration story. They will then research stories, summarize and share the gist of what they read to their small groups and to the entire class. As part of their conversations, students will note key details and themes from the stories they explored about migration and consider why these stories could be considered “underreported.”

Students explore the idea of ńcrossing boundariesî through bilingual, spoken-word poetry, culminating in a poetry slam at school or in the community.

This activity is very effective when students are working on writing a thesis for a Term Paper or Essay. It also helps students explore other parts of their paper and other discplines. It is one of my favorite actvities to use because it helps students think deeply about any subject.

Demonstrative pronouns – this, that, these, and those – are used to replace nouns in sentences. Demonstrative pronouns are difficult to grasp for English language learners for many reasons. First, they all start with th, which is a hard sound for English learners to produce. Second, they are used in relation to the speaker, which often creates further confusion for students. This is a discussion board prompt that we have used for class introductions in our online ESL classes and in our in-person classes. It begins with a video on language learning strategies and asks students to introduce themselves and discuss their own strategies.

In this module we discuss community in a variety of ways, from fiction and non-fiction. The module is mostly face to face, with online follow-up to practice written expression of their experience. The module finishes with a guest speaker from a First Nation, Miwok Rancheria. This guest builds on the readings, expands our ideas of who is in our community (city), and provides a face-to-face introduction and discussion with a member of the Miwok Nation (an experience no student had up to this point). This resource was created for upper elementary-beginning intermediate ESL students.  This unit consists of 8 lessons.  It is designed to be completed with students who already have a base knowledge of the alphabet, sounds, and basic spelling and are moving into the application stage of this content. The object of the lessons is to circle as many of the objects the student knows as possible, say the name of each correctly, spell the name of the object correctly, create a sentence using the item, etc.  There is also a reading and games portion  The unit can easily be imported to a powerpoint for more interactive learning in a traditional or virtual setting.

Module 11 of the 16-module ESL course explores the importance and relevance of law in the community. The lessons consist of critical thinking discussions on laws and scenarios dealing with the absence of laws. Conditionals are practiced as the grammar component. Reading and comprehension is on Veterans Day.  

This is Module 10 of 16 modules in the ESL course. Students learn about civic engagement, civic duties, and giving back to the community. Higher level thinking on advantages and disadvantages of civic engagement are offered as whole-class discussions. Grammar focus is on conjunctions, cause and effect, and the infinitive ’to’ verb tense. Extensive discussions using prompts strengthen students’ understanding and perception of civic consciousness leading to civic engagement.

This module entitled, Buy This Buy That, is the seventh of 16 modules in the ESL course. Students learn names of shopping items for different purposes – groceries, clothing, home, garden, etc. Higher level critical thinking activities and discussions are included in the lesson plans. Extensive vocabulary is provided to strengthen students’ word power especially to name everyday items to buy. The role-play activity mirrors actual experience at the store. Descriptive writing opportunities are provided in this module.

This is an introductory Module of 16 modules in the ESL course. Using ice-breaker activities and the friendly culture of the class, students will be able to warm up to the course and ease into the curriculum. Students get to know one another and be able to use appropriate grammar to write and present prompt responses. Grammar focuses on verbs 'to be' and continuous tenses. Students consider their goals in taking this course.
