This is a laboratory activity in which students will compare the amount of carbon dioxide in four different sources of gas and determine the carbon dioxide contribution from automobiles. They test ambient air, human exhalation, automobile exhaust, and nearly pure carbon dioxide from a vinegar/baking soda mixture.

This lesson and project emerged out of the course EDU 311: C, D, and E in Global Education (Culture, Diversity, and Equality). Specifically we look at the diversity of voices and cultures present in our nation’s history, which may or not be located directly in the curriculum. For this reason students, future teachers especially, need to be aware to omitted or misrepresented voices, including diversity responsibly, and be sensitive to diversity or multicultural education. The text we use is Diversity Matters (Spradlin, 2012) which delves specifically into dominant culture and minority culture helps to first frame then self identify the concept of intersectionality.

Breaking the frame: Ways of Reading Native Photography

My OER showcases the use of Native American photography as a means of enabling students to connect with historical and contemporary Native issues. Using specific in-class exercises as examples I will show how Native photography addresses issues of racial identity, stereotypes, the sexualizing of Native bodies, and Native American history. I will discuss how the writing of the formal analysis of this photography as art also enables students to engage with the art through a reading that elucidates the contemporary lives of Native individuals and communities. The OER will show how interactive exploration of artistic meaning, and the messages therein, in Native photography leads to increased student intellectual awareness and understanding of the indigenous world around them.

This set of animations and interactive simulations from the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University helps students develop an understanding of models used to understand the Earth system. Students consider the types of data that need to be included in a climate model, looking at inputs, outputs, and variables. The animations show how data is calculated for grid cells and assembled into a comprehensive model.

This in class activity allows students to calculate rates of change from graphs of glacial-interglacial temperatures and CO2 and modern temperatures and CO2.
