Population growth does impact energy use, but per capita energy consumption varies greatly across countries due to factors like geography, climate, economic structure, policies, and cultural preferences. Countries with small populations can have high energy consumption, while countries with large populations may use less energy.

This video, from ClimateCentral, features a team of scientists from the Northern Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling Project who study atmospheric air bubbles trapped in an ice core. This work highlights a period in Greenland's ice sheet which began about 130,000 years ago and lasted about 10,000 years; a period known as the Eemian. The air bubbles from the ancient atmosphere reveal what happened with climate change over that period of time.

Driving in Australia outlines the Kangaroo - what it is, a description of the marsupial, where it lives, what it eats and its social and reproductive facts. In Australia, the kangaroo is a driving hazard. It jumps onto the road unexpectedly and collides with vehicles and motorbikes. This outlines some basic knowledge of where the collisions might occur and the time of day. It also describes some precautional measures, tips for what to do if a vehicle collides with a kangaroo and then some information about what to do with an injured kangaroo and it's possible still alive offspring or joey.

In this resource, students learn about changes in water availability due to drought in California from 2013 to 2017. This resource provides opportunities for students to interpret data and analyze imagery for observational evidence of drought conditions through maps, satellite images, and photographs.

This PBS Learning Media activity addresses drought basics, including its causes and impacts and ways to assess it, by using media from NOAA and NASA. It defines the types of drought, the impacts, monitoring, and responses to drought. Use this resource to stimulate thinking and questions on the complexity of drought and to identify some variables used in defining drought.

In this set of activities, students learn about impacts of drought through news videos of communities facing serious water shortages, analyze drought data and models, and research and evaluate potential solutions. This lesson works well as a component within a larger unit on climate change, its impacts, and ways to address the resulting issues.
Through this set of lessons, students learn about the impacts of water …
Through this set of lessons, students learn about the impacts of water shortages due to drought, make connections to climate patterns, and explore community resiliency solutions. The lessons engage students in evaluating solutions for a particular case study community. Students will need to do additional research on solutions, but by the end of the lesson, students will be able to articulate how drought, although a localized problem, has far-reaching impacts, and to suggest solutions to a problem that is projected to intensify as the climate continues to change.

The Great Depression was a trying time for multitudes of Americans during the 1930s. Some could argue, though, that it was America's farmers that suffered the most. Farmers began to feel the economic crisis after World War One ended and the demand for their crops, produce, and livestock dropped dramatically. For the farmers of the Midwest, they faced an environmental, as well as, an economic crisis throughout the 1930s. The resources featured here can be used independently by students or in small-or-whole group instruction.

In the 2018-2019 school year, Northwest Educational Service District 189 brought together a design team of six Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten educators through a ClimeTime grant to find play-based, and engaging ways to teach climate science to early learners. This course shares out the findings of the team, including some work around designing for equity and 3-Dimensional Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) alignment. You will engage in activities to use with students including a puddle walk, soil permeability tests, and lesson examples. Phenomenon based lessons will be shared as well as a list of resources and recommended books compiled by our design team.
