Students take on the role of geographers and civil engineers and use a device enabled with the global positioning system (GPS) to locate geocache locations via a number of waypoints. Teams save their data points, upload them to geographic information systems (GIS) software, such as Google Earth, and create scale drawings of their explorations while solving problems of area, perimeter and rates. The activity is unique in its integration of technology for solving mathematical problems and asks students to relate GPS and GIS to engineering.

This was created to introduce my adult students to the accessibility of Geometry and Measurement in the world around them. It can serve as a 1-day activity, or be split into several days. It was followed by a series of more in-depth lessons on shapes, angles, perimeter, area, and volume. Introducing each activity and stopping to discuss after each activity is necessary to helping students process the new information, encourage their latent knowledge, and reassure their uncertainties. Pair or group work is helpful, not only in encouraging weaker students to participate, but in creating greater group cohesion for more effective learning in the new unit.

Tools used: rulers, yard sticks, meter sticks, measuring tape, string w/2 pencils to create circles; styrofoam meat trays, cardboard and scissors to create 2-d shapes; calculators

This is a project that follows the general PBL framework that can be used to help students master the concept of intermediate geometry. It was specifically designed to help students review the fundamental theorems of geometry involving lines, segments, angles, and basic shapes; use the properties of similarity and congruence to solve problems for geometric figures; master trigonometric ratios to solve right triangle problems; compare & contrast various geometric transformations and models; learn how to do geometric proofs and construct basic geometric figures; and understand the basic concepts related to the geometry of circles. Note that the project was designed and delivered per the North Carolina Math 2 curriculum and it can be customized to meet your own specific curriculum needs and resources.

Motivated by questions in cosmology, the open-content text Geometry with an Introduction to Cosmic Topology uses Mobius transformations to develop hyperbolic, elliptic, and Euclidean geometry - three possibilities for the global geometry of the universe.

The text, written for students who have taken vector calculus, also explores the interplay between the shape of a space and the type of geometry it admits. Geometry is suitable for a semester course in non-Euclidean geometry or as a guide to independent study, with over 200 exercises and several essays on topics including the history of geometry, parallax and curvature, and research aimed at determining the shape of the universe.

In this lesson, students will investigate error. As shown in earlier activities from navigation lessons 1 through 3, without an understanding of how errors can affect your position, you cannot navigate well. Introducing accuracy and precision will develop these concepts further. Also, students will learn how computers can help in navigation. Often, the calculations needed to navigate accurately are time consuming and complex. By using the power of computers to do calculations and repetitive tasks, one can quickly see how changing parameters likes angles and distances and introducing errors will affect their overall result.

This task gives students an opportunity to work with volumes of cylinders, spheres and cones. Notice that the insight required increases as you move across the three glasses, from a simple application of the formula for the volume of a cylinder, to a situation requiring decomposition of the volume into two pieces, to one where a height must be calculated using the Pythagorean theorem.

This 40-day final module of the year offers students intensive practice with word problems, as well as hands-on investigation experiences with geometry and perimeter.  The module begins with solving one- and two-step word problems based on a variety of topics studied throughout the year, using all four operations.  Next students explore geometry.  Students tessellate to bridge geometry experience with the study of perimeter.  Line plots, familiar from Module 6, help students draw conclusions about perimeter and area measurements.  Students solve word problems involving area and perimeter using all four operations.  The module concludes with a set of engaging lessons that briefly review the fundamental Grade 3 concepts of fractions, multiplication, and division.
