Columbia Plateau North Cascades National Park and vicinity to Whidbey Island WA

This transect across northern Washington State was one of our most geologically and biologically diverse field trips. The trip started with a drive across the relatively uniform basalt flows of the Columbia plateau and then traversed the extremely geologically complex North Cascades accessible from a scenic route through the small, and relatively less-traveled, North Cascades National Park. Steep gradients in elevation annual precipitation and winter temperatures revealed equally dramatic changes in vegetation from cold desert shrub lands to temperate coastal rain forests. Like previous trips, this one allowed students to observe glacial processes up close and trace the history of plant succession as glaciers retreat.

Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon Coast to Northern California

This trip followed the Columbia River across the basalt flows of the Columbia Plateau through the Columbia Gorge that bisects the Cascade Range and then turned south along Oregons spectacular coastline. The opportunities to integrate biology and geologic processes were limited only by time as students explored the plant and animal life of rocky and sandy beaches dune fields and coastal forests. The southernmost portion of the trip extended from Crescent City, CA (site of the 1964 tsunami) through the Klamath Mountains on the Oregon/California boundary one of the most geologically dynamic landscapes in North America. The tectonic history of the region with its resulting shifts in climate patterns and merging of previously isolated land forms along with an unusual abundance of ultramafic rocks have driven the evolution of one of the most diverse floras in North American populations of carnivorous Darlingtonia (Pitcher plants) provided a dramatic example of the unusually large number of plant species endemic to the serpentine soils of this region.

Concentrating on Copper: An Exploration of Mineral Commodities
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Introduction: Understanding market price fluctuations is difficult for the average consumer as they are not often cognizant of what raw materials are used for various products. The goal of this lesson is to illustrate as many of the economic principles related to mineral commodities as possible and, as the lesson is ideally taught in the context of an earth or environmental science course, to couple these principles with the realities of mineral mining and subsequent processes required to produce a raw material from an ore. The lesson uses copper as an analog for such commodities. While the scope of this lesson is, then, quite unusual for high school students, these concepts are quite necessary to produce a populace who can make educated, socially-responsible, and economically-prudent decisions in both their political and personal lives.

Background: This lesson is ideal for any situation where the goal is to teach earth or environmental science students about the realities of mineral commodities, how they are extracted, and how supply and demand for them work to create that market, produce goods, and affect the environment. In the real world, most of the supply-chain for such products is hidden from the end-use consumer. This is certainly not intentional on the part of governments and corporations, necessarily, but is pretty typical due to the remote nature of most mining operations and the lack of contact that consumers have with various mid-level parts of this supply chain. Typically, the only exposure to mineral commodity prices will occur when this consumer wishes to purchase a product that contains those minerals and whose price is observed to not be consistent over time. Petroleum is a common example of this in our everyday lives, but it is no different than any other. Thus, this lesson focuses on the life cycle of copper, which is a mineral commodity that most of us think little about in our day to day lives yet is just as prevalent and important as other commodities like petroleum.

Conserving and Using Climate-Ready Plant Collections
Unrestricted Use
Public Domain
Rating
0.0 stars

Word Count: 21308
This eBook aims to support current and future plant genetic resource managers as they consider the impacts of climate change on plants, agriculture, agrobiodiversity, and plant collections. Our goal is to provide information for readers to learn, understand, plan, and anticipate climate change extremes and how they might impact plant conservation and ex situ collections. Developing plans and preparing management and decision-making processes for dealing with the effects of climate change aligns with many sustainability practices and brings forward skills and techniques for forecasting and adaptive resource management.

In this eBook, we focus on introducing broad ideas, tools, and tactics to support ex situ plant collection managers in building climate-ready collections. We summarize the impacts of climate change on agriculture and food systems, and present a series of chapters that highlight important considerations of a complex landscape, including:

Chapter 1 – Understanding how climate changes impacts agriculture and food systems
Chapter 2 – Identifying the importance of plants in both mitigating and adapting to climate change
Chapter 3 – Understanding the need and value of ex situ plant collections for providing solutions that address the effects of climate change
Chapter 4 – Understanding how climate change affects plant interactions with pollinators, pathogens, and pests
Chapter 5 – Describing methods and opportunities for plant breeding to respond to climate change
Chapter 6 – Considering climate change impacts on plant collections management
Chapter 7 – Learning to develop plans that address the vulnerabilities of climate change
This information serves as an overview of a complex subject that includes the impacts of climate change on agricultural productivity and the critical roles that plant collections have in mitigating and adapting to a changing climate. A greater understanding of these key topics will provide critical insights into the planning necessary to ensure that food plant genetic resources are conserved for current and future generations.

The second visualization shows the cumulative contribution to sea level from small glaciers and ice caps plotted with the annual global surface air temperature anomaly.
