Students dissect fruits to investigate and estimate the number of seeds in each type of fruit. They germinate and plant a seed in the school garden and in the classroom to make observations of the growing plant over time, tracking and recording each stage of the plant life cycle. Students taste the flowers, seeds, and fruit of the new plants when the plant has reached the flower stage of the life cycle.

This first course in the physics curriculum introduces classical mechanics. Historically, a set of core concepts—space, time, mass, force, momentum, torque, and angular momentum—were introduced in classical mechanics in order to solve the most famous physics problem, the motion of the planets.
The principles of mechanics successfully described many other phenomena encountered in the world. Conservation laws involving energy, momentum and angular momentum provided a second parallel approach to solving many of the same problems. In this course, we will investigate both approaches: Force and conservation laws.
Our goal is to develop a conceptual understanding of the core concepts, a familiarity with the experimental verification of our theoretical laws, and an ability to apply the theoretical framework to describe and predict the motions of bodies.

In this lesson, students further their knowledge of redox titrations while examining the pressures that contamination and climate change put on access to clean water.

Step 1 - Inquire: Students observe a field scientist testing the dissolved oxygen content of the Hudson River and generate questions.

Step 2 - Investigate: Students apply the Winkler Method as a tool for assessing the health of bodies of water and identify the stresses placed on water sources by climate change.

Step 3 - Inspire: Students explore Sustainable Development Goal #6 and consider what steps they can take to protect the drinking water in their communities.

Climate change has been a hot topic lately. Scientists have been studying changes in the Earth’s climate over time. In this seminar you will learn about how and why Earth’s climate is changing. By the end of this seminar, you will be able to think reflectively about ways you can help lessen the changes in Earth’s climate.Standards3.3.4.A5Describe basic weather elements. This resource is part of a collection of visualizations that illustrate observed changes in temperature, precipitation, storms, floods, and droughts. This resource focuses on US and Global temperature. Rising global average temperature is associated with widespread changes in weather patterns. Scientific studies indicate that extreme weather events such as heat waves and large storms are likely to become more frequent or more intense with human-induced climate change. The larger collection includes climate change indicators within the oceans, snow and ice, and other ecosystems and the effects on humans and our society.

We are concurrently experiencing two global crises - the climate crisis and COVID-19. What are connections between the two? Why are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities disproportionately affected by both? This asynchronous Canvas course explores these questions and more. The course includes recordings from two guest speakers. Dr. Isabel Carrera Zamanillo from Stanford University presents on climate justice connections. Dr. Carrie Tzou, Professor and Director of the Goodlad Institute for Educational Renewal at UW Bothell, shares strategies and instructional resources for teaching about COVID-19.
