Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) is an initiative that provides third-party verification of the performance claims made by technology manufacturers. Students work in a jigsaw format, they start in an expert group analyzing one particular aspect of the earthquake that occurred (e.g., tsunami, geologic maps, damage assessment). After analyzing the data/information provided, students get into their new groups, which are a "consulting team" to make recommendations to key governmental officials about the earthquake they studied and implications for future development. These are presented in a poster session style event, which then leads to individual papers that are written about the same topic, which are peer reviewed and revised. Students are asked to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses in the process and to consider changes for future opportunities, as well as connect the curriculum to the overall process of science.

EcoMode – Fostering Eco-innovative Business Models Development in SMEs in Hospitality IndustryToday protecting the environment has become of paramount importance. Eco-innovation and sustainability can play a key role within the hospitality industry and promote environmental sensitivity to minimise people's impact on the planet. EcoMode offers an eco-innovative approach to tourism through an online interactive course based on OERs. Its aim is to raise awareness and provide tools to professionals to develop their own sustainable and innovative business model within the tourist sector and the hospitality industry.

This set of lessons looks at a variety of natural disasters from the Black Death of the Middle Ages to Hurricane Katrina in our too-recent memory, to fears of avian flu pandemics that haunt the future through the lens of economic analysis. The contexts were chosen to facilitate the teaching of economic reasoning principles not only in economics courses, but also in history and the other social studies disciplines. Each lesson addresses a question that reflects people's compassionate reaction to news of disaster and develops one or two key tools of economic analysis in answering that question. Case studies of past disasters provide real-world illustrations. Mandated content standards and testing have kicked 'current events' days from the social studies classroom calendar, transforming disasters from 'teachable moments' to curricular inconvenience. Using the economic way of thinking to sift through the chaos of natural disasters, however, reveals threads of uniformity running through the litany of horrors and devastation unique to each event. Once identified, the common features of past disasters form a template for analyzing 'the next one,' allowing teachers to quickly incorporate today's unexpected news into the planned curriculum outline.

In most elementary schools, particularly in rural ares, it is difficult to find a teacher of color or male elementary school teachers.  In our effort to try to increase our elementary education program enrollment, we were fortunate enough to bet both a black woman and a man who are currently teaching in elementary schools within our service area.  In their own words, they will tell students why they chose to teach at this level.

Also, both projects used a wide range of media and technologies that were matched to learning and teaching needs.

Effective Design Critique Strategies Across Disciplines is the first of its kind: a collection of immersive critiquing strategies and related scholarship developed by a diverse and international group of authors. The shared methods include those that utilize online learning environments, facilitate active learning, and engage design critique experiences via play. They range from anecdotal accounts of trying new things in unusual learning environments to theory-based approaches. The featured scholarship presents assessments and valuable discourse concerning the effectiveness of various critique strategies. The collection of strategies and research contribute to addressing the distinct gap in research- and practice-based resources that are available to design and project-based educators.

Math in Real Life (MiRL) supports the expansion of regional networks to create an environment of innovation in math teaching and learning.  The focus on applied mathematics supports the natural interconnectedness of math to other disciplines while infusing relevance for students.  MiRL supports a limited number of networked math learning communities that focus on developing and testing applied problems in mathematics.  The networks help math teachers refine innovative teaching strategies with the guidance of regional partners and the Oregon Department of Education.
