This English Language Arts lesson focuses on the understanding of literary devices as related to poetry with poems found via poetryfoundation.org.Students will analyze tone and mood by rephrasing lines of poetry to match the author's intent.Students will explore the poet's message and defend their ideas in paragraph form.This assignment addresses Nebraska state standards: NE.LA 10.1.6.A NE.LA 10.1.6.C  NE.LA 10.1.6.K  NE.LA 10.2.2.E This lesson will take about 40-50 minutes.

Students' groans about studying poetry may disappear with this lesson in which students read poetry from various writers and use these poems to examine the sounds and sense of language.

This resource provides lecture notes and writing assignments for the study of poetry. While specific poems are presented here, these notes and assignments can be adapted and applied to practically any thematic group of poems.  The unit contains several modules. The first posits the work of African American poet Langston Hughes as poems that establish a legacy of oratorical poems addressing social issues faced not only by African Americans, but by any and all Americans, especially the historically disenfranchised.  The unit explores poems in Hughes' legacy, focusing on three poems by African American poets Maya Angelou, Elizabeth Alexander, and Amanda Gorman, who composed U.S. presidential inaugural poems. The second module explores nature poetry. Students read and analyze poems that explore, ponder and sometimes celebrate the relationship between human beings and nature. Ultimately, students compose poetry explication essays. The third module explores the book-length prose poem "I Remember" (Joe Brainard), teaching students to locate and make use of peer-reviewed articles.  Additionally, students write their own "I Remember" poems. Keri McAllister uses technology, workstations, and a lot of choice to turn her students loose on a unit on poetry. In workstations students watch "poetry in motion" videos, create a podcast about their chosen poet, and post reflections on a chosen poem on their class blog.

STUDENT ACTIVITY - 5th - TXThis is a distance-learning lesson students can complete at home. The student will evaluate the impact of sensory language and figurative language in poetry, and create an original poem using the outdoors as inspiration for their writing.This activity was created by Out Teach (out-teach.org), a nonprofit providing outdoor experiential learning to transform Science education for students in under-served communities.

How can poetry be fun for all 8th grade learners?  Students have previously learned about poetic elements and figurative language.  Using those skills, students apply the knowledge to demonstrate the poetic elements and figurative language in a favorite song.

Working in small groups, students compose found and parallel poems based on a descriptive passage they have chosen from a piece of literature they are reading.

This seminar addresses the inherent challenges of translating poetry from different languages, cultures, and eras. Students do some translation of their own, though accommodations are made if a student lacks even a basic knowledge of any foreign language.

Students evaluate the impact of sensory language and figurative language in poetry, and determine the overall meaning of the poem using the outdoor classroom as a context for their writing.

Students will examine architectural structures in paintings and how they are used, also considering the art elements, composition, emphasis, color, and light. They will also study the relationship between the built environment and nature in the paintings. Students then complete activities in which they select words and phrases to describe a painting's mood and write related poetry. Then they create drawings and write related poetry. As an optional activity, students may construct their own "camera obscura" and create a drawing.

Students will examine works of art that incorporate Asian export objects, and then respond to them using Japanese haiku poems.
