This lesson plan is meant to be a follow up to lesson plan one pertaining to Emma Bell Miles’ and Thoreau’s poetry. This lesson is meant to focus on the authorial Point of View that comes through in these author’s poetry. This lesson also discusses different literary periods from the times of these authors.

This lesson plan is meant to follow the structure of using the author background video, the point of view video, and then the handout. A good follow up would be giving the students a journal prompt to write about and expand on one of the topics from the handout. A longer project could be created where students present on one of the topics from the handout.

Students will apply research skills in searching for a job.Students will design a budgeting plan, based on average pricing for the city in which they live. This will include mortgage rates (with 0% down) vs. renting, health insurance, car loans, gasoline, car maintenance, student loans, utilities (gas, electric, water & sewer, phone, cable, gas), groceries, medical expenses, child care, miscellaneous,  emergency fund, savings account. Students will be able to analyze, compare, and contrast the pros and cons to two different post secondary plans. Post Secondary Education:, including school of choice, rate of student loans based on income, and research in desired profession (using the low average income to average income as a reference point). 

This course is designed to help the student improve his or her writing ability, which is necessary for ongoing success in all academic subjects. Coursework focuses on critical reading and analytic writing in response to readings with emphasis on organization, unity, coherence, and adequate development; an introduction to the expository essay; and a review of the rules and conventions of standard written English. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: recognize organizing principles, including the relationship between sentences; outline the relationships between main ideas and subordinate ideas within assigned readings; write analytical paragraphs in response to readings; recognize main and secondary points, making somewhat fine distinctions; make simple deductions from a series of facts; use punctuation correctly; demonstrate sound principles of reading critically; craft short essays employing a variety of organizational patterns; narrow a topic, write a clear and focused thesis statement, and create an outline with main and subordinate ideas; support the thesis statement with sufficient appropriate primary and secondary points and details; craft appropriate introductions and conclusions; use transitional words and expressions and employ a variety of sentence patterns to improve coherence; proofread to eliminate spelling and usage errors. This project is a four year initiative focused on integrating arts into the core curriculum through teacher education, practice, and coaching.

Because ESL Level 1 students may not all be at the same level, some of the readings may be too difficult for some students. However, the emphasis in these activities is to work on reading strategies for all levels of reading, both at the students' level and above it as well.This module can be combined with the others uploaded about grammar, teaching sentence structure, and writing activities to create an entire OER based ESL class for this level.

This book has been developed to support English Composition courses at rural Arizona community colleges. The book adopts the metaphor of conversation to discuss the reading and writing moves students are expected to make in academic settings. This Remote Learning Plan was created by Danielle Reinhardt-Sigler in collaboration with Eileen Barks and Caryn Ziettlow as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project.
