The syllabus used for the University College Groningen course Biopsychology in Spring 2021. Can theatre bring new voices into public debate? Facilitating theatre workshops with community members who experience social marginalization is an art that, when done well, feels more like magic. But even the best facilitators are not magicians. With this workbook we pull back the curtain on the magic by taking readers behind the scenes of the Hamilton-based research and performance initiative Transforming Stories, Driving Change (TSDC.) Since 2015, TSDC teams have worked alongside community partners and performer-advocates to make plays designed to draw attention to the voices and visions of people whose opinions are not often represented in discussions of the future of the City. Through our performances, we have tried to contribute to building the movements that can make public leaders more accountable to people who are affected by their decisions. Five years and four plays later, we offer this workbook as a practical guide to TSDC’s creative approach.

Understanding and Applying the Exner Equation

The Exner equation describes the mass balance for sediment deposition and erosion. The original version embodies the main short-term processes of deposition and creation of the stratigraphic record is created. It can easily be modified to include additional processes like subsidence, compaction, and carbonate or evaporite formation. The Exner equation is far more important in quantitative sedimentary geology than the usual topics from fluid mechanics that are included in undergraduate sedimentary geology texts.

The goal is to take the equation apart to help undergraduates develop a physical intuition for what they mean and how they can be estimated using simple measures like length and time scales. The emphasis is on building intuition rather than mathematical solution methods.

Unit 1-SfM: Introduction to SfM

This unit introduces students to Structure from Motion (SfM). SfM is a photogrammetric technique that uses overlapping images to construct a 3D model of the scene and has widespread research applications in geodesy, geomorphology, structural geology, and other subfields of geology. SfM can be collected from a hand-held camera or an airborne platform such as an aircraft, tethered balloon, kite, or UAS (unmanned aerial system). After an introduction to the basics of SfM, students will design and conduct their own survey of a geologic feature, followed by an optional (but highly encouraged) introductory exploration of SfM data after returning from the field.

Unit 2: Geodetic survey of an outcrop for stratigraphic analysis

Geodetic survey techniques, such as TLS and SfM featured here, have many applications in sedimentology research, including lithological identification and analysis, sediment surface topography, and sequence stratigraphy. In this unit, students will design a survey of a geologic outcrop to conduct a sequence stratigraphy analysis. After conducting the survey in the field, students will analyze the parasequences found within the outcrop by mapping and measuring section thickness in the point cloud. The goal is to calculate deposition duration and sedimentation rate based on thicknesses extracted from the data.
