This second part of the "Navigating the news" resource begins with the news of a fictional protest in a city. We live this event as if it were breaking, as we gradually pick up pieces of information (from speculative tweets to memes, opinions to out of context media) react and share.
The aim is to show how typical this is of how we consume news online, whether breaking or not. We are fed superficial, incomplete, sometimes fake, often biased information on a regular basis.
But not all is lost! This resource shows students that good habits can make an impact and help us navigate the news in a healthy way. The good habits are:
Pausing & taking a step back Embracing the nuance Keeping an eye on the bigger picture Developing critical thinking
This last one, critical thinking, is divided into the following sections: News articles Media neutrality & the left-right divide Experts & authorities Opinion pieces & commentators Algorithm Stats Studies Social media
It finishes off with the Bullshit-o-meter, a framework to quantify the quality of a source. Concretely you add or reduce credit depending on how valid the information contained within a source is.

The students will be using Google Earth Pro to place circles on a map and calculating the area of these circles. Students will make a model of these circles onto a hard copy using scale factor. At the conclusion, the students will present findings to administration, the board of education, state and local leaders as well as their peers. These findings can be presented through the choice of a display board, flyer, video production or prezi. This blended module includes teacher-led discussion, group-led investigation and discussions along with technology integration.

As an “applied ethics” course, the goal is to help you understand …
As an “applied ethics” course, the goal is to help you understand the role that ethical (and other) values play in our lives, and how argumentation that involves values both depends on and differs from reasoning about non-evaluative matters. For even if agreement about matters of value is sometimes challenging, it is possible to think critically in ethical matters and to have better and worse arguments for our beliefs. Gaining proficiency in this sort of critical thinking isn’t just an academic need — it will help you understand and engage the world around you and be able to resist those who either intentionally or unintentionally would deceive you. This course is driven by concrete scenarios and real-world issues we face today, but it is framed by 2500 years of Western philosophy and the conceptual and analytical tools developed in this tradition. Thus, the course provides a good introduction to philosophy, and it will hopefully encourage some of you to pursue further study within the philosophy department.

Philosophical Thought: across cultures and through the ages, is an open-educational resource (OER) to be used as a collection of readings for introductory philosophy courses. The objectives for developing and sharing this open resource are three-fold:
1. to provide a collection of philosophical works that can be used as a foundation for faculty and students to use in undergraduate philosophy courses 2. to provide a resource that is free to students 3. to provide a resource that compiles philosophical thought from a variety of cultures and eras
The works included in this book come from a wide range of sources. However, this book is indebted to Henry Imler’s editorial work on Sapienta and Phronesis, both of which are OER texts available on Pressbooks.

For photosynthesis to occur, a plant needs sunlight, water and carbon dioxide. To see photosynthesis in action, we will observe how a green plant (elodea) uses sunlight to take in CO2 and release O2 (control). In addition, we will deny sunlight to another specimen, to observe how photosynthesis does not occur without sunlight. Follow the procedures below to complete this experiment.
