Lars Thore Fadnes explained that globally, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) relating to substance abuse show that this is a significant factor reducing the lives of young people (ages 15-35). Perhaps because of the stigma and negative connotations, Fadnes feels that this area tends to be down-prioritised compared to other health issues. However, Fadnes argues that interventions are available for substance abuse and that it is both preventable and treatable, making it a good focus for an attainable SDG. He would like to see efforts increased in this area to reduce its global burden.

Safety First: Real Drug Education for Teens is the nation’s first harm reduction-based drug education curriculum for high school teachers. The free curriculum consists of 15 lessons that can be completed in a 45- to 50-minute class period.

Each lesson is designed to engage students through interactive activities such as discussions and role-playing. The curriculum is aligned with National Health Education Standards as well as Common Core State Standards so it can be easily integrated into Health classes.

Social Problems: Continuity and Change is a textbook covering social problems, poverty, racial and ethnic inequality, gender and sexual diversity inequality, aging, substance abuse, crime, sexual behavior, family, schools and education, work and the economy, urban and rural problems, health and healthcare, population and the environment, war, and terrorism.

Introduction to the causes of substance use and abuse in U.S. society, the enforcement of drug and alcohol abuse and contemporary modalities of prevention and treatment of substance abuse. Theories of substance abuse will be reviewed and the effectiveness of current enforcement practices will also be discussed.

The Maryland State Department of Education is working to prevent the misuse and abuse of opioids. This is a student-centered lesson for 3th grade students. This lesson, Substance Abuse and Making Healthy Choices, can be modified or remixed to meet the needs of the students you teach. The content of this lesson includes explaining by definition what is a drug. Students then learn drugs can come in many forms and can have different uses, and because of this students should not use drugs/medicine unless instructed to by a trusted adult. The content of this lesson is from Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

This course focuses on families with members who are substance abusers, and the ways in which these families function. The course explores the methods and resources available for helping such families.

This program explores the correlation between the reduction of the incidence of substance abuse and the reduction of the incidence of child abuse. Estimates indicate that 40-60% of child abuse cases are substance abuse related; yet, meager resources and attention are directed toward alleviating the problem. This tape offers six elements that provide a framework for successful intervention with substance abusers.
