Students are presented with an engineering challenge that asks them to develop a material and model that can be used to test the properties of aortic valves without using real specimens. Developing material that is similar to human heart valves makes testing easier for biomedical engineers because they can test new devices or ideas on the model valve instead of real heart valves, which can be difficult to obtain for research. To meet the challenge, students are presented with a variety of background information, are asked to research the topic to learn more specific information pertaining to the challenge, and design and build a (prototype) product. After students test their products and make modifications as needed, they convey background and product information in the form of portfolios and presentations to the potential buyer.

Through a series of three lessons, each with its own hands-on activity, students are introduced to 1) forces, loads and stress, 2) tensile loads and failure, and 3) torsion on structures—fundamental physics concepts that are critical to understanding the built world. The associated activities engage students through experimenting with hot glue gun sticks to experience tension, compression and torsion; the design of plastic chair webbing strips; and problem-solving to reinforce foam insulation "antenna towers" to withstand specified bending and twisting.

Through a class demo and PowerPoint® presentation, they learn the basic classes of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites) and how they differ from one another, considering concepts such as stress, strain, ductile, brittle, deformation and fracture. In the course we will use a feminist interdisciplinary lens and invite students to look critically at how practices like privatization, shrinking public “safety nets”, de-regulation, and the commodification of health services intersect inevitably with gender, race and class, for both men and women. We will draw on a blend of empirical studies, policy materials, films and guest speakers to examine specific health issues like menstrual health, corporate obstetrics, abortion, obesity, intersex, harassment and other forms of gendered violence, mental health and stress, parent-child attachment, as well as ethics and pharmaceuticals. "What makes birds such agile flyers? One answer is their array of filoplumes, hairlike feathers that detect tiny changes in airflow. In an effort to make flying vehicles just as nimble, researchers have created flexible microsensors that carry out the same function. These sensors can detect changes in airflow speed as small as 4 millimeters per second. Four curved cantilevers connected in circuit register tiny changes in voltage as they flex. Each is thinner than a human hair and about three times as wide and can be programmed to curl to a defined curvature, thanks to the cantilevers’ polymer-on-silicon structure. Adopting this natural design for sensing airflow on the fly could help make autonomous flyers quicker and smarter..."

Mental health & wellbeing was a topic that emerged from the selection of strategies by participating teachers. In each country this was a topic that generated a lot of interest and teachers were eager to explore it. Thus, the project team created additional resources to support the development of research lessons for this strategy – such as stress mindset videos to teach stress mindsets in each partner language and classroom posters to reinforce the messages from the lessons throughout the school year.
