Students will be introduced to Japanese currency via pictures and asked to say how much each is in Japanese. Then students will take part in an auction. Each student will receive at least one item that they will need to describe to the group. This OER activity was created by Anita Saalfeld and reviewed by Chrystal Liu as part of the 2023 World Language OER Summer work and training. Educators worked with NDE staff to create OER Learning Plans and materials. The attached activity is designed for 9 - 12 World Language teachers for students at Novice Mid to Intermediate Mid proficiency level in Spanish. Students will shop on a Spanish-language website to create an outfit, and then they will vote on their favorite outfits across a variety of categories. This activity addresses the following NDE World Language Standard(s): NE WL 1.2 and NE WL 4.2.It is expected that this activity will take students about 15-20 minutes to complete.

Save The Food! A Food Waste Prevention Teacher's Guide This resource provides five lesson plans and resources about preventing food waste. Wasted food costs money and harms the environment. This course explains basic concepts of food waste prevention and provides easy tips for students to follow. The content was adapted from the EPA’s “Food: Too Good to Waste” tool kit.The course was developed by Audrey Seligman, MPH, with assistance and consultation from George Schooley, M.A. TESOL. Funding for the course was provided by the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy Board.

Students listen to a story about sheep that go shopping for a gift. Unfortunately, they don't have quite enough money and must barter wool to obtain the gift they want. The students discuss what barter is and suggest other solutions to the sheep's problems. Students earn cotton balls and pennies for work that they do. They use the cotton balls to decorate a sheep and use extra cotton balls and pennies to buy additional decorations for their sheep.

They will also participate in a mini shopping experience where they will decide what gift they would like to buy for their partner (in class) and why. Though this website focuses on providing tours to Egypt, it offers an extensive list of words in the Egyptian dialect in both Arabic script and in transliteration. The word list includes the kinds of words you might need to know when traveling, such as "Go straight please" and "I need room service." Each word is transliterated and accompanied by an audio file. There is also an article about history of the Arabic language and the Egyptian dialect. Photo galleries on the site could be used as part of classroom instruction.
