This course introduces the theory and the practice of engineering ethics using a multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural approach. Theory includes ethics and philosophy of engineering. Historical cases are taken primarily from the scholarly literatures on engineering ethics, and hypothetical cases are written by students. Each student will write a story by selecting an ancestor or mythic hero as a substitute for a character in a historical case. Students will compare these cases and recommend action.

Engineering systems design must have the flexibility to take advantage of new opportunities while avoiding disasters. This subject develops “real options” analysis to create design flexibility and measure its value so that it can be incorporated into system optimization. It builds on essential concepts of system models, decision analysis, and financial concepts. Emphasis is placed on calculating value of real options with special attention given to efficient analysis and practical applications. The material is organized and presented to deal with the contextual reality of technological systems, that substantially distinguishes the analysis of real options in engineering systems from that of financial options.

"Our microbiome has profound impacts on our health, and technological advances have allowed for ever-growing pools of data from microbiome-wide studies. This means that our microbiome could be used to estimate disease risk, but the nature of the data makes the endeavor difficult. Similar issues with using genetics to predict disease risk led to the development of the polygenic risk score. Motivated by the success of that framework, a team of researchers recently developed the microbial risk score (MRS). MRS summarizes the complex microbial profile by first identifying a sub- community consisting of disease-associated microbial taxa and then integrating those microbial taxa into a continuous score based on the alpha diversity of the identified sub-community. MRS can be easily integrated with the other risk scores built upon metatranscriptomics, host genetics, or host transcriptomics, making it useful for 'multi-omics' approaches as well..."

"HIV is a lifelong illness that affects millions of people worldwide and in the US disproportionally affects men who have sex with men. Past research has shown that men who have sex with men have a distinct microbiome from other groups. Additionally, the lymphoid tissue invaded by HIV-1 after infection is partially regulated by the gut microbiome. However, little is known about the microbiome’s role in HIV-1 susceptibility and progression. In a recent study, researchers found bacteria that enhance inflammation were more abundant in the gut as well as a decrease in important commensal bacteria that are protective, months before HIV-1 infection. Increased prevalence of certain Prevotella species and decreased prevalence of Bacteroides species in particular could result in inflammation. As other research has shown, some species of Prevotella and Bacteroides can play pro- and anti-inflammatory roles, respectively..."

In this lesson, students participate in two rounds of a role play to help them understand the role of banks in facilitating economic growth through loans. Round 1 is conducted without a bank. After the first round, students read excerpts from Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton’s 1790 report to Congress in which he proposes a national bank because the United States had few banks at the time. Students then conduct Round 2 of the role play with a bank. After the round, students read excerpts from and summaries of the statute creating a national bank, Thomas Jefferson’s opposition, and Hamilton’s rebuttal.
