Changes in the gut microbiota during diversification of cichlid fish

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Many factors affect the evolution of species, but a new influence has recently been recognized. Gut microbes – tiny residents of the intestinal tracts of all animals – have wide-ranging effects on the physiology of their hosts and scientists are increasingly appreciating that diversification may actually be correlated with changes in the gut microbiota. However, the extent to which gut microbes evolve along with a host species remains unclear. A recent study examined this correlation using an ideal model – a system where evolution repeated itself in different geographic settings. Beginning with two groups of Nicaraguan cichlid fish that evolved in parallel in different crater lakes researchers sequenced microbes from fish guts and lake water to determine whether species diverged in parallel. They found that bacterial communities in fish were distinct from those in lake water..."

The rest of the transcript, along with a link to the research itself, is available on the resource itself.

D-Lab: Energy offers a hands-on, project-based approach that engages students in understanding and addressing the applications of small-scale, sustainable energy technology in developing countries where compact, robust, low-cost systems for generating power are required. Projects may include micro-hydro, solar, or wind turbine generators along with theoretical analysis, design, prototype construction, evaluation and implementation. Students will have the opportunity both to travel to Nicaragua during spring break to identify and implement projects.
D-Lab: Energy is part of MIT’s D-Lab program, which fosters the development of appropriate technologies and sustainable solutions within the framework of international development.
This course is an elective subject in MIT’s undergraduate Energy Studies Minor. This Institute-wide program complements the deep expertise obtained in any major with a broad understanding of the interlinked realms of science, technology, and social sciences as they relate to energy and associated environmental challenges.

Openendedsocialstudies.org created this collection of background readings, images, and questions on William Walker and U.S. imperialism in the years between the War with Mexico and the U.S. Civil War. The College of Wooster also hosts a webpage dedicated to Willam Walker's adventurism which includes primary documents, timelines, an historical context essay, discussion questions, and additional resources. https://williamwalker.voices.wooster.edu/

The period between the end of the Mexican-American War and the U.S. Civil War included numerous attempts by U.S. business interests to expand into Central America. William Walker was interested not only in the mining, banana plantations, and possible canal, rail, and steamship routes to connect the East and West coast of the United States but also in the expansion of slavery into the tropical climate of the region.
