Hearing is a familiar and important human sense that is a topic naturally of interest to those who are curious about human biology. This unit will enable you to relate what you read to your own sensory experiences - and indeed many of the questions asked have exactly that function. This unit will be best understood by those with some biological understanding.

Intrinsic disorder plays a role in conserving the circadian circuit

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Over billions of years of evolution, the rhythm of Earth’s day and night – the diurnal cycle – has remained one of very few constants. As a result, all kingdoms of life have evolved internal time-keeping mechanisms. Organisms with the ability to maintain a circadian clock have an evolutionary advantage in both survival and reproductive rates, and disruption of circadian rhythms has been linked to disease states, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, depression, and cancer. As shift work, stress, digital devices, and health conditions can disrupt our internal clocks, better understanding of how they function is needed. A new review of the circadian circuit examines the role of protein disorder in maintaining clock function. In animals and fungi, the circadian clock functions as a protein-directed feedback loop, with the positive arm stimulating the negative arm..."

The rest of the transcript, along with a link to the research itself, is available on the resource itself.

Measures of disease frequency

A very common aim of epidemiological investigation is to estimate the frequency of disease in a population. This is of particular importance in the case of surveillance and disease monitoring systems, and is commonly the central aim of many descriptive studies. There are two main measures of disease frequency used by epidemiologists - the prevalence and the incidence of disease, which each measure different aspects of disease. The survival time, which is closely associated with the incidence, is another measure commonly used. Counts of disease are not commonly used in epidemiological studies, although they can be useful when deciding upon resource requirements when implementing disease control strategies.

Students learn about sound waves and use them to measure distances between objects. They explore how engineers incorporate ultrasound waves into medical sonogram devices and ocean sonar equipment. Students learn about properties, sources and applications of three types of sound waves, known as the infra-, audible- and ultra-sound frequency ranges. They use ultrasound waves to measure distances and understand how ultrasonic sensors are engineered.

Monitoring Noise Levels with a Smart Device

Students learn the physical properties of sound, how it travels and how noise impacts human health—including the quality of student learning. They learn different techniques that engineers use in industry to monitor noise level exposure and then put their knowledge to work by using a smart phone noise meter app to measure the noise level at an area of interest, such as busy roadways near the school. They devise an experimental procedure to measure sound levels in their classroom, at the source of loud noise (such as a busy road or construction site), and in between. Teams collect data using smart phones/tablets, microphones and noise apps. They calculate wave properties, including frequency, wavelength and amplitude. A PowerPoint® presentation, three worksheets and a quiz are provided.

Students learn about frequency and period, particularly natural frequency using springs. They learn that the natural frequency of a system depends on two things: the stiffness and mass of the system. Students see how the natural frequency of a structure plays a big role in the building surviving an earthquake or high winds.
