Database Management Systems is the software that allows us to create and use a database. This video looks at the DBMS, their functions, some examples of popular software solutions and a quick look at Structured Query Language (SQL)

The database management software is the program used to create and mange the database. The database model is the architecture the DBMS used to store objects within that database.

Recently, a doctored video of Speaker Nancy Pelosi got millions of views on social media. Deepfakes are becoming easier to make and spread, and Above the Noise is here to help people understand this new phenomenon and what to do about it.

Students examine what deepfakes are and consider the deeper civic and ethical implications of deepfake technology. In an age of easy image manipulation, this lesson fosters critical thinking skills that empower students to question how we can mitigate the impact of doctored media content. This lesson plan includes a slide deck and brainstorm sheet for classroom use.

The Dependability Checklist is a tool to help students evaluate resources for their assessments. Students answer ten 'yes' or 'no' questions about a resource and then generate a score indicating how trustworthy or dependable that resource is. Working through the Checklist introduces students to indicators of reliability. As students become more confident in evaluating sources, they won't need to rely on the Checklist. This tool is used as part of teaching evaluation in first year units at Deakin University. It can be used as part of assessment or activities where students evaluate resources providing the dependability score.

As social media engagement among youth continues to rise, students are becoming increasingly exposed to and involved in hashtag campaigns related to themes of identity, diversity, justice and social action.

Digital ESL is a hands-on, paper-first course that teaches beginner English learners digital literacy through guided experimentation on their smartphones. It was designed to maximize hands-on learning opportunities both in and outside the classroom, utilizing students' own smartphone devices. Although originally created for teaching older adult (age 65+) beginner learners of English, it can be used with adults of any age.

We partnered with students to create Digital Essentials, a series of online modules for students to quickly build digital skills for study and work.
The modules cover different digital capabilities for creation, communication, data, information, learning and functional skills.
The modules are on the Pressbooks platform and include H5P content for interactivity and self-assessment. There is also a short quiz at the end of each module to check your knowledge.

Digital Learn is a website with a variety of tutorials for adults who are new to using computers (on topics such as introduction to email, navigating a website, and online job searching).

This is a Media Mentor-driven program teaches parents how to use an iPad with their children effectively with educational apps that help with early literacy.

This unit facilitates students in studying the positive and negative effects of society’s current preoccupation with digital media, with specific focus on teenagers. Students will be introduced to the concept of Utopia via an excerpt from Thomas More and the song “Imagine” by John Lennon. The class will then proceed to research historical Utopian communities such as the Amish and the Shakers among others. Following this the class will be encouraged to engage in a self-reflection on digital use. Research will be conducted on the potential positive effects of digital media, such as for academic research and learning, safety and self-help, as well as negative consequences of excessive digital media use noted in the literature such as effects on attention span, psychosocial functioning, and behavioral addiction. Strategies used during the nonfiction portion of the unit will include a minimum of teacher presentation, with an emphasis on individual and group research, student-created multimedia presentations, note taking, class discussions, and reflective writing. Then the unit will delve into the prevalence and fascination with dystopian literature and study a classic science fiction story, “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, and discuss the role of technology in this dystopia. Finally, students will write their own stories imagining how digital technology will impact a future that may occur in their lifetimes.
