In this problem-based learning module, students will use their knowledge of the ancient Roman Empire and will work to analyze critical theories historians agree contributed to the fall of Rome. Students will then work to compare the problems faced by the Romans with problems citizens of the United States still largely face today. Through this investigation, students should recognize how modern technology, government agencies, laws and resources help to solve societal problems that could have once destroyed an empire. With this new understanding, students should work to present a solution to a major problem that plagued the Roman Empire during the years leading up to its collapse.Remix Resource uses key South Carolina standards for 6th Grade Social Studies and Language ArtsOriginal Resource uses key Ohio standards for 7th Grade Social Studies and Language ArtsAuthor: Blended Learning Teacher Practice Network Date Added: 07/23/2018License: Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 Language: English Media Format: Audio, Downloadable docs, Graphics/Photos, Text/HTML

This graduate seminar examines civic engagement in international, national and local environmental governance. We will consider theories pertaining to civil society development, social movement mobilization, and the relations that nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have with governments and corporations. During the course of the semester, particular attention will be given to the legitimacy and accountability of NGOs. Case studies of NGO and community responses to specific environmental issues will be used to illustrate theoretical issues and assess the impacts that these actors have on environmental policy and planning.

This lesson plan was created by Kellee Vornhagen as part of the 2021 Nebraska CTE-Beginning Teachers Institute. The attached lesson plan is designed for students in grades 9-12 as a introduction to a collaboration in the classroom. This lesson plan can also be used in any class requiring group work of any kind. Students will create a list of expectations for collaboration, create a poster and present it to the rest of the class. These will be the norms used for group work for the rest of the term.

The updated AASL Standards Framework for Learners includes the shared foundation of Collaboration. The standard calls for students to engage in cooperative learning in order to grow their own knowledge base. Students may have experienced varying levels of success with group learning experiences. The following lesson provides students an opportunity to improve their group learning skills and gain an understanding of the benefits of collaborative learning. Learning Objectives Students will collaboratively determine what makes a successful collaborative learning experience. Students will identify the major benefits of collaborative learning. Students will identify important components of self-reflection and peer evaluation. Cover image attribution: "Collaboration" by diannehope14 at Pixabay.com

The work plan outlined here is intended to facilitate a 4-hour session for a collaborative work group of subject matter experts. This group's mission is to develop course learning outcomes that blend collaborators’ course learning outcomes into one set of outcomes. Our objective is to craft a course module template aligned with the new course learning outcomes that is versatile enough to be adopted by multiple institutions across the globe.

How can we conduct scientific research so that we have evidence to support a claim?Students in this problem-based learning module are invited to design a testable question to guide Scientific Research, Evaluate the pH of various solutions, Identify Variables, Conduct a Scientific Investigation, and Analyze/Communicate results. How can we conduct scientific research so that we have evidence to support a claim? Antacid tablets are a multi-billion dollar industry. Claims are made regularly by certain brands that their extra strength tablets contain “DOUBLE the acid neutralizing power per tablet of regular strength antacids.” How effective are antacids? Are double-strength antacids twice as effective as regular strength antacids? Have you ever noticed a parent/guardian/family member take an antacid tablet? Stomach chemistry is about acids and bases. When the pH of a stomach is too acidic then it might make the person have a stomach ache. In some cases “heartburn” or “acid reflux” are used as terms to describe the problems some people face. Antacids are usually basic which, when taken, might help raise the pH level in a stomach thus making a person feel better. You are invited to design an investigation with a partner, or a team of 4 students, to test your own idea about the effectiveness of antacids. The challenge? Have a driving question, clear variable identification, and an analysis of your results. Materials for your test will be provided to you by your teacher. At the culmination of your investigation your design team will make a 30-second pitch on your phone to show at your family Thanksgiving meal to explain the benefits (or negatives) of using antacids, and how antacids work.

While studying the Articles of Confederation government and the Constitutional Convention in this problem-based learning module, the students will determine the benefits of peacefully changing an inept government. They will deduce the crucial steps needed for peaceful change to happen within a society. An area of research will be chosen to help solve a problem critical to the students’ middle school lives. Feedback will be gathered through a video interview or a Google Form survey of crucial stakeholders. Students will research the alternatives to improve upon their selected problem. Students will present their findings to a decision maker and wait to receive feedback.

This module offers school principals and school librarians the opportunity to build and strengthen understanding and skills toward collaborative instruction with the school librarian and classroom faculty. This module is also appropriate for graduate candidates in school leadership and/or school librarian programs. This module is based on the British University learning model. In England, Small groups of learners meet once a week with a "tutor" - AKA professor to discuss relevant topics, share their work, submit assignments and get feedback. While the faculty suggests resources, learners are expected to conduct research to find their own. This model is especially applicable to school library and school principal candidates who need to build research skills for on-going professional development in the field. Librarians, of course, always need to hone their research skills.Like the British model, learning for this program is largely self-guided. Resources are provided for the learner to develop expertise demonstrated in three major assignments: a white paper, a tri-fold pamphlet, and an analysis of a case study.Candidates must demonstrate and justify competence in targeted ISLLC and ALA Standards to successfully complete the module. This competence is assessed by a rubric used by the candidate for self-assessment and by faculty for performance assessment .Because the learning for this module is largely self-guided, faculty needs to be available for consultation through regularly scheduled office hours and email. The goal of this consultation is to provide coaching and explanation. Faculty will use the Discussion Board Task as formative assessment to guide facilitated instruction and coaching. Summative assessment is demonstrated by the three artifacts produced in the module.
