In this update to the 2008 standards, Washington is adopting the 2016 Technology Standards for Students
released by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). These standards were developed
collaboratively with teachers, administrators, subject matter experts, state and national associations, and
stakeholders in educational technology. Teams of Washington teachers, technology integration
specialists, and teacher-librarians have reviewed these standards to ensure they effectively meet the
needs of Washington students.

These standards emphasize the ways technology can be used to amplify and transform learning and
teaching, and they resonate with our state’s aspiration to empower connected learners in a connected
world. In addition, they complement statewide efforts to enhance instruction in digital citizenship and
media literacy, which are critical elements of preparing our students for careers, post-secondary
aspirations, and beyond.

The 2016 Health Education K–12 Learning Standards and Physical Education K–12 Learning
Standards reflect OSPI’s continuous commitment to supporting rigorous, inclusive, age appropriate, and medically accurate instruction to ensure that students are prepared to live healthy, productive, and successful lives in a global society.

If implemented effectively, these standards and outcomes will lead students to understand and apply the knowledge and
skills necessary for safe and healthy living, and, in turn, for successful learning across all academic disciplines.

Social studies is a vital component of education in Washington state. The Office of Superintend¬ent of Public Instruction (OSPI) envisions “all students prepared for post-secondary pathways, careers, and civic engagement.” Additionally, the National Council for the Social Studies states, “The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an inter¬dependent world.”

Students who receive quality instruction in social studies are engaged in learning that promotes inquiry and thoughtful civic participation. With this in mind, we are pleased to introduce OSPI’s updated Washington State K–12 Learning Standards for Social Studies. Our hope is that you will find these standards to be rigorous, thoughtful, inquiry-driven, and organized for easy accessibility.
