Born into poverty in rural Georgia and raised under the shadows of Jim Crow segregation and the Great Depression, Alice Coachman fought through gender taboos and racial barriers to become a record-breaking track star. Then, in the 1948 London Olympics (the first to be held after WWII), she leapt to victory in the high jump and became the first Black woman in history to win Olympic gold. One of postwar America’s most high-profile athletes and the first African American woman to be spokesperson for a national brand, Coachman’s life and achievements were honored during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games.The Woodson Center's Black History and Excellence curriculum is based on the Woodson Principles and tells the stories of Black Americans whose tenacity and resilience enabled them to overcome adversity and make invaluable contributions to our country. It also teaches character and decision-making skills that equip students to take charge of their futures. These lessons in Black American excellence are free and publicly available for all.

Alternative Administrative Certification: Socializing Factors Influencing Program Choice

This study used an organizational socialization lens to examine factors influencing participants’ choice to pursue the principalship and an alternate administration certification program. Through an analysis of participants’ interviews, factors emerged from the codes that were compared with dimensions of a socialization framework. A key finding from this study is the intersection of socializing factors that influenced participants’ decisions to pursue the principalship and their decision to pursue an alternative preparation programs. This intersection impacted how these aspiring and current principals came to participate in the alternate preparation program.

The program helps prepare at-risk kids for entry into college and the health professions through a multitude of services based at the hospital. This workshop demonstrates how using R can advance open science practices in education. We focus on R and RStudio because it is an increasingly widely-used programming language and software environment for data analysis with a large supportive community. We present: a) general strategies for using R to analyze educational data and b) accessing and using data on the Open Science Framework (OSF) with R via the osfr package. This session is for those both new to R and those with R experience looking to learn more about strategies and workflows that can help to make it possible to analyze data in a more transparent, reliable, and trustworthy way.
