French Grammar Games for Grammar Geeks

This is an an online, mobile-friendly, digital language-learning grammar game collection for students of French created by Sonja Burrows and Brigitte Humbert at Middlebury College. It is a playful learning space, free and open to the public, where one can drop by anytime and from anywhere.
The games on the site are divided into three sections:
•Sentence Whiz, where users can practice questions, negations, relative pronouns, active and passive voice, and more structures.
•Word Nerd, where users can use nouns, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, possessives, prepositions as well as additional parts of speech.
•Verb Challenge, where users can master past, present, and future verb tenses as well as tackle conditional, subjunctive, imperatives, and infinitives.
In addition, a guide for the learning space supports users who do not know where to begin or who would like to complete games in an established or recommended path. A resources area allows users to access explanations of grammar and, in some sections, traditional grammar exercises which support the games. Relevant sections of the resources area are linked to games which treat the same grammar points, so that users who complete a game and seek more practice or grammar explanations can easily find that needed support. A navigation and filtering system also allows users to select games which only treat a certain grammar point.

Game Over Gopher

Game Over Gopher is an exciting tower defense game that guides students in plotting coordinate pairs, differentiating negative coordinates from positive coordinates, and identifying the four quadrants. Hungry space gophers are marching towards a prize carrot, and to defend it players place tools around the coordinate grid to “feed” gophers and make them lose interest. Ruby mines (which must be placed at designated x, y coordinates) yield currency that players spend to strategically place carrot launchers, garlic rays, corn silos, and beet traps – gopher feeding tools. To introduce students to the coordinate grid, Game Over Gopher introduces new skills via interactive tutorials and uses consistent visual clues (e.g., x red, y blue) to guide players in plotting coordinates. This means it’s not necessary to teach students coordinate plotting ahead of time. As the levels progress, the number of tools available increases, the level of math vocabulary increases, the scale of the grid changes, and players are asked to expand their mastery of the grid by reflecting points across axes. The game lowers intimidation about the coordinate grid, helps students understand how positive and negative numbers reflect each other across the axes, and helps students get comfortable with the four quadrants.

Students must think about the factors of each number as they play this game. Students quickly learn the value of selecting prime numbers as a strategy. The beauty of the game design is that students will review the factors of many numbers and mentally add the sum of these factors together in search of the "best move."

Gamification - Lesson One and Two
Unrestricted Use
Public Domain
Rating
0.0 stars

This resource provides both the instructional lecture of the lesson in part one and the interactive gamification of the lesson in part two. Lesson one focuses more on the theory about trees and leaves. A PowerPoint is used as an aid in the lecture, and Kahoot is used to test the students knowledge about the presented content. Lesson two focuses on taking the content learned in lesson one and applying it through a scavenger hunt game. Students are given a list of trees and leaves to hunt. They must work together with their group to find as many as they can.  As they search, the must take a photo of their findings and upload it to Padlet. These photos will be used later in an upcoming video project and used to document points. Each item on the list is worth a certain amount of points; points will be tracked through Padlet. Whatever team has the most points wins.

Generate 100 Ideas with Brainwriting Ideation Prompts
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating

This video has 100 Prompts for your students or participants to come up with 100 different ideas. You should ask each student to grab a pen & paper (ideally post-its) and have a different piece of paper for each idea. This video can be used to kick-off the Ideation State of Design Thinking (or any Ideation Session), using Brainwriting. I have used for both in-person and live-online education at University College Dublin.

I usually use 10 prompts in class - get a student to pick a number between 1 and 9 inclusive and then use the Chapters below the video to play from that number (e.g. someone shouts out seven so I play from 71)

Brainwriting is a solo exercise - write down all your ideas and THEN share with others before coming up with even more ideas. Research shows that this hybrid-approach (of generating ideas alone first, and then sharing with a team) works best. "Groups organized in the hybrid structure are able to generate more ideas, to generate better ideas, and to better discern the quality of the ideas they generate" (Girotra et al, 2010)

This science resource covers a variety of topics; however, the specific URL is on Genetics. It has significant explanations on the basic Principles of Genetics, Co-dominance, Incomplete dominance, and Sex-Linked traits. The units have precise and manageable explanations, and there are numerous links and additional resources to support instructors and students to advance learning. The access to videos and online simulations enhances particular areas, and the diverse assessments support mastery of skills.
This is a very purposeful resource on genetics; it is useful to make learning more effective either as an overall instructional method or as an individualized learning supplement.

These lessons demonstrate how a good understanding of mitosis, meiosis and fertilization and a basic understanding of the roles of DNA and proteins can provide the basis for understanding genetics. Important genetics concepts for students to learn are summarized and multiple learning activities are suggested to help students understand Punnett squares, pedigrees, dominant/recessive alleles, X-linked recessive alleles, incomplete dominance, co-dominance, test crosses, independent assortment, genetic linkage, polygenic inheritance, etc. This overview provides links to suggested activities which include hands-on simulation and laboratory activities, analysis of class data, review games and discussion activities and questions.
