In Brazil, the term língua da gente (literally ‘language of the people’) refers to the way that people actually talk in everyday speech. And that, in essence, is the object behind this series. We hope to provide practical lessons that demonstrate how people really speak, and we do this by presenting brief, slice-of-life dialogs, which focus on some daily situation, scenario, or task that we encounter every day.

Each audio podcast, generally between 8-12 minutes, includes the presentation of a brief dialog, a line-by-line English translation, and more in-depth analysis of the pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and cultural content in the lesson. Discussion blogs also accompany each lesson, providing community interaction for comments and questions. In broad terms, the lessons are subdivided into three levels of difficulty: Beginning, Elementary, and Intermediate. Additionally we have a cultural show that covers current events and related social issues.

In this activity students will work to reinforce and learn high frequency measure words in Chinese. The lab instructor will roll either of the dice, and then the students will choose and image on their bingo cards that corresponds with the measure word shown. After a student achieves a bingo, they have to make a short sentence with each of the nouns on their bingo card, a number, and the appropriate measure word.

This is a 5th grade lesson plan meant to teach students about onomatopoeias. The lesson should take a total of 55-60 minutes. 

In this activity students will practice high frequency phrases and vocabulary around food by doing a restaurant role play. Students will take on the roles of different restaurant patrons and a server to practice.

Because Shakespeare’s works were meant to be performed, students will be introduced to Shakespeare’s language in general and the plot and themes specifically of Othello through quoting lines. This is an introduction to a longer unit. This lesson was created by Kristi Bose and is designed for Grade 9 English Language Arts students. Each student will memorize one key quote from Othello, build background knowledge about Shakespeare’s language including iambic pentameter, and make predictions about the plot and themes of the play. Students create alphabet books, which are used as an integrated assessment with science, health, social studies, and any other content area. This lesson plans looks at the theme of community.

This lesson focuses on a family depicted in a work of art. Students practice using vocabulary related to people and families. Activities emphasize oral and written descriptions of the people portrayed in the work of art, using possessive adjectives. Students are challenged to infer what the relationships are between figures depicted and what individuals are doing, based on such clues as their pose.
