Students learn about endangered species and actions humans have taken to address the issue of endangered species. The Xpeditions lesson has students think about their experiences with zoos, learn about the reasons for captive breeding, and come up with an opinion about the role of zoos and aquariums in addressing this issue. The additional activity in the Teaching Materials section has students learn about a controversy within the scientific community regarding the captive breeding of tigers. Students will read articles written by the scientists, develop an opinion, discuss the issue with their classmates, and draw a conclusion based upon additional information they have researched.

The lesson asks students to consider “Who is an immigrant?” and challenges them to dig deeper and extend their response as they come to understand themselves more deeply. Students will complete one of two extension activities at the end of this lesson: creating a cereal box suitcase or connecting with a pen pal.

In this workshop participants will be able to discuss cultural sensitivity and learn to embrace diversity. Cultural blindness — being “fair” by treating everyone the same is often hard to view as problematic. Discussion in this workshop will focus on inspiring students to understand different cultures and beliefs as well as the importance of culturally sensitivity to these different beliefs. This workshop will encourage participants to; explore their own biases, consider different points of view and will utilize cultural lenses to develop cultural sensitivity.

The goal of the coding notebook is to clean your .bib file to only contain references that you have cited in your manuscript. This cleaned .bib will then be used to generate a data table of full first names that will be used to query the probabilistic gender (Gender API) and race (ethnicolr) classifier. Proportions of the predicted gender for first and last author pairs (man/man, man/woman, woman/man, and woman/woman) will be calculated.

"Archaea are single-celled organisms typically associated with extreme living environments. But many types make their home in the human body, including the gut. Unfortunately, what archaea are common and how they contribute to human health remain largely unknown. To gain a better idea, scientists used 16S rRNA gene deep sequencing to analyze fecal samples gathered from 897 East Asian people living in South Korea. Archaea made up nearly 10% of all microbes detected and displayed a surprisingly diverse membership. Most members were methane-producing archaea (green). But salt-loving “haloarchaea” (red) dominated several samples. Based on these variations in microbial community structure, samples could be classified into one of four types – or “enterotypes”. Future studies could help scientists refine these archaea enterotypes and understand their relationship to human health..."

"Like most animals, mosquitoes carry many microbes in and on their bodies. These microbial communities (microbiota) impact the mosquitoes’ growth, survival, reproduction, and capacity to transmit pathogens, but the tools available to researchers to study mosquito microbiotas are limited. In other species, particularly mammals, microbiota transfer is a useful method to research microbial dynamics. However, such transfers had not previously been attempted in mosquitoes, until a recent study where researchers successfully transferred microbiota between individual _Aedes aegypti_ mosquitoes. as well as between _Culex quinquefasciatus_ and _A. aegypti_ mosquitoes. They transferred whole-body microbiota from adult donors to larvae and then observed the microbiota dynamics. The recipient mosquitoes retained most of the donor bacterial groups, suggesting that the transfer was successful, and the typical microbiota shifts occurred as the mosquitoes moved from larval stages to adulthood..."
