Isotope Hydrograph Separation

Separation of hydrographs into event and pre-event fractions based on measurements and data, rather than arbitrary formulae, was a revolutionary technique in watershed hydrology in the 1970s and has continued to be widely used. Hydrograph separation showed that Hortonian overland flow and rapid delivery of "new" event water to streams during storms was not as widely applicable as had been previously thought. Instead, most water in streams during storms in humid, forested watersheds is typically "old", pre-event water. In most cases, hydrograph separations are conducted using the stable isotopes of water, since they are ideal, conservative tracers. In this exercise, we will be conducting a classic isotope hydrograph separation for a forested watershed in northeastern Ohio.

Journey to Understanding: An Introduction to North Dakota Tribes is an introductory booklet intended to give a quick overview of Indigenous culture in North Dakota. It is a starting point for the rest of the North Dakota Tribal History & Culture series. The booklet explains the names and backgrounds of the nations that share geography with North Dakota. It also teaches basic cultural competency to facilitate interaction for people from a different background. The content is presented in the form of self-quizzes with provided answers. Journey to Understanding was originally used within the North Dakota Department of Human Services (NDDHS) --now part of the North Dakota Department of Health & Human Services (NDHHS)-- and was developed by NDDHS in collaboration with the Native American Training Institute. After its initial publication, it soon made its way from state government and into classrooms. With the permission of NDHHS, it is now distributed as part of the North Dakota Tribal History & Culture series.

Learning Lab Contextualised Content (LLCC) is a multidisciplinary suite of digital open educational resources. It supports learners and educators by providing foundation resources in an interactive, flexible, and shareable format. Developed by educators and digital learning designers, the aim of this content is to provide realistic examples of the implementation of skills and knowledge required by students at a tertiary level. Included in the LLCC are materials on a range of subjects from maths, physics, and writing, to critical thinking, collaboration, and time management. The resources encourage learners to think about how they will apply these skills in their future careers and focus on four industry areas: engineering, economics and marketing, healthcare, and social services. All objects sit within a larger story, that of the Salty Creek Community Festival, and can be explored holistically by the learner. However, each learning object is also modular, meaning it can be used as an independent lesson or activity.

Students work as biomedical engineers to find liquid solutions that can clear away polyvinyl acetate polymer "blood clots" in model arteries (made of clear, flexible tubing). Teams create samples of the "blood clot" polymer with different concentrations to discover the concentration of the model clot and then test a variety of liquids to determine which most effectively breaks down the model blood clot. Students learn the importance of the testing phase in the engineering design process, because they are only given one chance to present the team's solution and apply it to the model blood clot.

Lifespan Development examines the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional changes that occur throughout a lifetime. This course covers the essentials in understanding human development, psychological research, and theories of growth and development. Students will come to understand the lifespan perspective and to analyze growth through each of the major stages of development: prenatal development, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood (including emerging adulthood), middle adulthood, and late adulthood. The course covers key topics in each of these stages, including major developmental theories, genetics, attachment, education, learning, disabilities, parenting, family life, moral development, illnesses, aging, generativity, and attitudes towards death and dying.

Faculty members may readily adapt the course’s OER content to include new developments and research to equip students with what they need to have success in their sociological journey.

La lombalgie est une entité clinique très fréquemment rencontrée en médecine générale, dans un service d’urgences, dans les consultations spécialisées en orthopédie, en rhumatologie et en médecine physique. Dans une très large majorité des cas, les douleurs sont vraisemblablement dues à des troubles dégénératifs bénins présents au niveau d’éléments anatomiques de la colonne lombaire comme les disques, les articulations interapophysaires postérieures, etc. Ces anomalies peuvent, dans certains cas, entraîner des dysfonctionnements douloureux (contractures musculaires, etc.) généralement transitoires comme en témoigne l’évolution clinique le plus souvent favorable avec disparition spontanée des douleurs en quelques jours alors que les éventuelles lésions dégénératives visibles sur les examens paracliniques persistent (faible corrélation anatomo-clinique). On parle dans ce cas de lombalgie « commune » ou « non spécifique ». Parfois les douleurs lombaires peuvent s’accompagner d’une irradiation douloureuse au niveau du membre inférieur selon un territoire radiculaire caractéristique. Dans ce cas, une compression radiculaire est responsable d’une lombosciatique L5 ou S1 ou d’une lombocruralgie L3 ou L4. Enfin, dans des cas plus exceptionnels, une douleur lombaire peut avoir une cause potentiellement grave (infection, néoplasie, fracture ostéoporotique, rhumatisme inflammatoire, etc.). Dans ce cas, on parlera de lombalgie « spécifique ». Au vu de la prévalence très élevée de la lombalgie et de la nature variée de son étiologie, une stratégie de triage doit être adoptée lors de la mise au point diagnostique afin d’utiliser à bon escient les différents examens paracliniques disponibles dans l’intérêt du patient ainsi que dans une optique d’efficacité.
