An interactive applet and associated web page that provide step-by-step instructions on how to divide a line segment into any number of equal parts, using only a compass and straightedge. The applet starts with a given line segment and ends with that segment divided into n parts. In the applet n=5, but the construction works for any n. The animation can be run either continuously like a video, or single stepped to allow classroom discussion and thought between steps. The text on the page has printable step-by-step instructions. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. The attached file is our syllabus for the Introductory Statistics course that we are teaching as an OER course. The summary of the syllabus is as follows.This course uses MyOpenMath for testing students' knkowledge via homework and quiz assessments. MyOpenMath is an open platform for students to use without any additional access fees like the one for our other statistics courses which charge an extra fee to use a different online platform.This course uses MS Excel as the statistical tool. We have created templates for students to use to evaluate statistics for a given data. Students have access to all Microsoft products via their college account without any extra charge. Using Excel also eliminates the need for buying a calculator.A big part of the course is the project, which is based on real world data. Students are provided with data in a spreadsheet by the instructor. Data is mined from public domains. Students are to submit their input using MS Word and MS Excel.We are also using MS Teams to record additional video resources on using Excel for statistics.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the properties of a cube. A 3-D cube is shown in the applet which can be interactively manipulated using the mouse. Research has shown that some younger students have difficulty visualizing the parts of a 3D object that are hidden. To help with this, the student can rotate the cube in any axis simply by dragging it with the mouse. It can also be 'exploded' - where a slider gradually separates the faces to reveal the ones behind. The cube can also be made translucent so you see through it to the other side. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector, and printed to make handouts. Students learn about the mathematical characteristics and reflective property of ellipses by building their own elliptical-shaped pool tables. After a slide presentation introduction to ellipses, student “engineering teams” follow the steps of the engineering design process to develop prototypes, which they research, plan, sketch, build, test, refine, and then demonstrate, compare and share with the class. Using these tables as models to explore the geometric shape of ellipses, they experience how particles rebound off the curved ellipse sides and what happens if particles travel through the foci. They learn that if a particle travels through one focal point, then it will travel through the second focal point regardless of what direction the particle travels.

Distance from a point to a line using trigonometry

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate how to find the perpendicular distance between a point and a line using trigonometry, given the coordinates of the point and the slope/intercept of the line. The applet has a line with sliders that adjust its slope and intercept, and a draggable point. As the line is altered or the point dragged, the distance is recalculated. The grid and coordinates can be turned on and off. The distance calculation can be turned off to permit class exercises and then turned back on the verify the answers. The applet can be printed as it appears on the screen to make handouts. The web page has a full description of the concept of the concepts, a worked example and has links to other pages relating to coordinate geometry. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. Does It Cut It? Understanding Wind Turbine Blade Performance

Students gain an understanding of the factors that affect wind turbine operation. Following the steps of the engineering design process, engineering teams use simple materials (cardboard and wooden dowels) to build and test their own turbine blade prototypes with the objective of maximizing electrical power output for a hypothetical situation—helping scientists power their electrical devices while doing research on a remote island. Teams explore how blade size, shape, weight and rotation interact to achieve maximal performance, and relate the power generated to energy consumed on a scale that is relevant to them in daily life. A PowerPoint® presentation, worksheet and post-activity test are provided.
