"Leukemia relapse after conventional treatments is difficult to treat and has high patient mortality. Relapse is driven by the reawakening of previously quiescent cancer cells. Traditional treatments are ineffective against quiescent cells, as they instead target rapidly dividing cells. A new study investigated a potential dual-target treatment, C212, in cell culture. C212 is a derivative of curcumin, a compound that has shown anticancer properties in previous research. C212 was effective against both growing and quiescent leukemia cells. C212 drives quiescent leukemia cells deeper into dormancy by increasing their exit threshold, and then kills these deep-quiescent cells. This differs from previous strategies that awaken quiescent cells to kill, which runs the risk of wakening treatment-resistant subpopulation of cells. "Even with antibiotics, severe pneumonia can lead to sepsis and death. Researchers in Germany have now identified a promising new therapy that may improve outcomes. Reporting in the journal Anesthesiology, the scientists indicate that targeting C5a, a component of the body’s complement system, may be a novel adjunctive therapy for severe pneumonia. One reason why patients don’t fare well with Streptococcus pneumoniae is that their highly activated immune system can damage tissue as it tries to clear the pathogen from the body. An important part of the body's first-line immune defense is the complement system, plasma proteins that patrol the body and coordinate with immune cells to kill invading bacteria. For example, when complement protein C5 is cleaved into C5a and C5b, C5b goes on to poke holes in bacteria. The smaller C5a is pro-inflammatory, attracting and activating neutrophils and making blood vessel walls more permeable to immune cells..."

"Cancer cell growth depends on the production of new blood vessels by tumor endothelial cells in a process called angiogenesis. But the growing cancer cells produce large amounts of lactic acid as a byproduct of glucose breakdown. How tumor endothelial cells are able to survive in this toxic environment is unclear. In a recent study, researchers sought to uncover the mechanism of tumor endothelial cell survival in a lactic acid-rich tumor microenvironment. Using genetics and proteomics, they compared the RNA and protein levels of pH-regulating proteins in tumor endothelial cells to those in normal endothelial cells. They found that carbonic anhydrase 2 (CAII), an important pH regulator, was elevated in tumor endothelial cells, which was induced through the VEGF signaling pathway. Blocking CAII in tumor endothelial cells decreased cell survival in lactic acid conditions, and treating tumor-bearing mice with a CAII inhibitor had decreased lung metastasis..."

"Metabolic regulation is vital to maintaining energy balance throughout the body, and different cell types have different ways of maintaining this balance. CAMKK2 is an enzyme common to various cells that aids in breaking down glucose through cellular respiration, but the details of how CAMKK2 carries out that role in different cells remains unclear. To find out, researchers deleted the gene for CAMKK2 from human kidney and liver-derived cells. Deleting CAMKK2 significantly reduced cellular respiration in both cell types versus parental cells. However, isolated mitochondrial respiration increased in kidney cells but decreased in liver cells. Proteomic analysis traced this difference to translational and transcriptional changes in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). SDH is the only enzyme complex that participates in both the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain. Removing or overexpressing SDH subunit B in CAMKK2-deleted cells confirmed the functional link between SDH and CAMKK2..."

This OER (open educational resource) is made to be used while teaching Anatomy and physiology of the auditory mechanism, pathology of the ear, assessment of hearing using behavioral, electroacoustic and electrophysiological measures with related instrumentation; Interpretation of audiometric test results. Experiential clinical-related activities.

Addresses foundational knowledge related to many aspects of clinical practice in speech-language pathology. It has been developed to support students entry into their first clinical practicum and supervision experience.

Evidence-based clinical aspects of audiologic identification, assessment, intervention, and prevention of hearing impairments relevant to the practice of speech-language pathology; strategies for working with individuals and their families across the lifespan; culturally and linguistically appropriate practice.

Students learn how to annotate texts through the process of C.A.T.C.H. Then, they will use their annotations to make meaning by inferring/interpreting and evaluating/making judgments. Through this 10 1/2 minute video instruction and three handouts students will learn and practice an easy to remember 3-step process to critical thinking that will make their learning visible and help them discover how and why they can make meaning out of everything they read, see, and hear. Now they will have ready answers for discussions, questions, essay-writing, and quizzes.

Given that geriatric patients may get frustrated when working on their impairments in therapy, the SLP must be able to alleviate their frustration within the session to allow for the most efficient and practical sessions. It is hypothesized that geriatric patients, like children, would also benefit the most from games or from a conversation that is unrelated to therapy; however, games will likely be more beneficial for alleviating stress due to games being able to distract the client from the therapy session better than conversation can. This research would ask the following question: Are games more effective in alleviating frustration for geriatric patients during therapy sessions than conversations unrelated to therapy?
