Highlights from the past and present of Colorado, from the rich online collections of the Library of Congress.

This video highlights a variety of climate change research initiatives from scientists at the University of Colorado, Boulder. It describes the changing dynamics of Antarctic ice sheets and the impacts of reduced Arctic sea ice. The video illustrates the excitement of this research through interviews and video clips of scientists in the field.

This video features CU Boulder Professor Jeff Mitton and his research team, who study the effects of mountain pine beetle infestations on the forest ecology in the Rocky Mountains. They explain the pine beetle life cycle and how they attack trees. An outlook into the future is also provided.

This is a coloring book that I drew and designed as a fun way for my students to review information and/or doodle on. The pictures are inspired by images I use in my General Biology I class, and are presented in the same order as they are discussed in my class. The coloring book is NOT designed as an alternative to attending lecture, studying notes, etc. You can download the PDF of the coloring book and then color the pictures on an app (like using an iPad and Apple Pencil) or print out the images and color them using your preferred method (like with colored pencils).

This informational text explains the colorful phenomenon known as the northern lights (aurora borealis) and the southern lights (aurora australis). The text is written at a grade two through three reading level. This version is a full-color PDF that can be printed, cut and folded to form a book. An impassioned attack on Abraham Lincoln and the human toll of the Union war effort. Columbia, wearing a liberty cap and a skirt made of an American flag, demands, "Mr. Lincoln, give me back my 500,000 sons!!!" At the right, Lincoln, unfazed, sits at a writing desk, his leg thrown over the chair back. A proclamation calling for "500 Thous. More Troops," signed by him, lies at his feet. He replies, "Well the fact is--by the way that reminds me of a Story!!!" The artist refers to the false report published by the "New York World" that Lincoln joked on the battlefield of Antietam. A fond yet sardonic tribute to the aging Massachusetts statesman Daniel Webster, whose final bid for the Whig presidential nomination was defeated by Winfield Scott in 1852. The artist is wryly critical of the apparent Whig predilection for military candidates. The print seems to have appeared in the fall of 1852 (the Library's copyright deposit impression was registered on September 18), at around the time Webster, running as an independent candidate, withdrew, mortally ill, to his estate at Marshfield. He died on October 24, 1852. Webster is shown as a schoolboy, standing before the U. S. Capitol building, holding the hand of Columbia, a young girl with an American flag as a sash. In her free hand, she holds a pole topped with a Phrygian cap. Nodding coyly, Columbia says, "Though my Guardians at Baltimore won't let me have you--believe me, Daniel, I love and honor you for all your past devotion and services, and can never forget you. If you had neglected your "Books" and "Slate," and attended more to "Fencing" and "Gymnastics," you might have succeeded better." Webster stoically responds, "Notwithstanding the past, I am still your friend, and when you are in difficulty you may command my services." In the foreground lie his books, slate, and cap. "Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) regulate cell-fate decisions during embryonic development. But after birth, dysfunctional BMP expression is linked to some human diseases, like carcinomas. In lung cancer, BMPs are reactivated and suppress AMPK signaling. Mitochondrial stress activates AMPK to a ‘normal’ level, where it promotes cancer cell survival, but AMPK can induce cell death if ‘hyperactivated.' BMPs inhibit LKB1, a kinase that can hyperactivate AMPK, making BMPs a potential therapeutic target. So, researchers tested two BMP inhibitors as a combination treatment with mitochondrial targeting agents. In lung cancer cell lines that express LKB1, the combination treatment activated AMPK and suppressed cell growth. The combination treatment was increasing nuclear localization of the aptly named apoptosis inducing factor (AIF) in these cells, an effect that depended on LKB1 expression..."

"High-quality reference genomes are needed to understand the physiology and function of uncultured microbes in complex ecosystems. Metagenomics has been an incredibly useful tool for studying microbial communities, but assigning sequence assemblies accurately to genomes is difficult in microbial species or strains that lack a reference genome. These 'consensus genomes' have lower resolution than those generated from cultured isolates. Combining single-cell genomics with metagenomics may allow us to overcome these methodological weaknesses. Thus, researchers recently developed a framework called SMAGLinker, which integrates single-cell genomes from microfluidic droplets and uses them as guides for metagenome assembly. Compared to metagenomics alone, SMAGLinker showed more precise contig binning and higher recovery rates of rRNA and plasmids in a mock microbial community. In human gut and skin microbiota samples, SMAGLinker returned more genomes than the conventional metagenomics frameworks..."
