The course "Fluid Flow, Heat and Mass Transfer," course number ta3220, is third-year BSc course in the program of Applied Earth Sciences at Delft University of Technology. Students in this class have already taken a course in "Transport Phenomena" in the second year, and "Fluid Flow Heat and Mass Transfer" is designed as a follow-up to that class, with an emphasis on topics of importance in applied earth sciences, and in particular to Petroleum Engineering, groundwater flow and mining.
In practice, however I start over again with first principles with this class, because the initial concepts of the shell balance are difficult for students to grasp and can always use a second time through. The course covers simple fluid mechanics problems (rectilinear flow) using shell balances, for Newtonian and power-law fluids and Bingham plastics. Turbulence for Newtonian fluids is covered in the context of friction factors for flow in pipes, flow around spheres and flow in packed beds.

Forensic Engineering: Learning from Failures
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

What do collapsed buildings, infected hospital patients, and crashed airplanes have in common? If you know the causes of these events and conditions, they can all be prevented.

In this course, you will learn how to use the TU Delft mind-set to investigate the causes of such events so you can prevent them in the future.

When, for instance, hundreds of hospital patients worldwide got infected after having gall bladder treatments, forensic engineering helped reveal how the design and use of the medical instruments could cause such widespread infections. As a result, changes were made to the instrument design and the procedural protocols in hospitals. Learning from failure in this case benefitted patient health and safety across the world.

After taking this course you will have an understanding of failures and the investigation processes used to find their causes. You will learn how to apply lessons gained from investigating previous failures into new designs and procedures.

Fracture Mechanics: An Engineering Primer
Unrestricted Use

In this second edition, which is the result of numerous revisions, updates, and additions, the authors cover the basic concepts of fracture mechanics for both the linear elastic and elastic-plastic regimes. The fracture mechanics parameters K, G, J and CTOD are treated in a basic manner along with the test methods to determine critical values. The development of failure assessment based on elastic-plastic fracture mechanics is reflected in a comprehensive treatment.

Three chapters are devoted to the fracture mechanics characterisation of crack growth. Fatigue crack growth is extensively treated, and attention is paid to the important topic of the initiation and growth of short fatigue cracks. Furthermore, sustained load fracture and dynamic crack growth are discussed, including various test techniques, e.g., the determination of the crack arrest toughness.

Finally, there are two chapters dealing with mechanisms of fracture and the ways in which actual material behaviour influences the fracture mechanics characterisation of crack growth.

This textbook is intended primarily for engineering students. It will be useful to practising engineers as well, since it provides the background to several test and design methods and to criteria for material selection.

Framing

Is a good, solid argument enough to make an impact? How would your data improve the stance that man-made global warming is just an “opinion”? How would you explain your opinion on school tests, budget cuts, crime, immigration, safety and security issues? No doubt that your persuasiveness relies on your arguments. But your ability to influence and convince critically depends on the way you frame your message.

In today’s world, you often need to reduce a complex reality to a concise and convincing message. Framing is an approach that deals with the way we convey our message: our words, images, and metaphors. To take one basic characteristic, a good frame engages the listeners’ values and emotions – it is easy to remember and it is something that people will usually agree with intuitively.

When you enter into a debate, you might be faced with frames of your opponents – and you will have to reframe the debate. This game of framing and reframing makes the debate to look like a chessboard made out of words. Of course, politicians play this game, trying to pull the debate towards their own words and metaphors in order to win their audience. But the game can be found everywhere: in the world of business, science, media – even at home.

We invite you to join our journey of learning the game of framing and reframing. You will discover how this game is played, and how you can play it yourself.

This course suits people who are engaged with and interested in public and political debates. Not only people from the public sector will find it useful, but also engineers, consultants, managers and anyone who wants to make an impact in discussions and debates.

Fundamentals of Quantum Information

Quantum information is the foundation of the second quantum revolution. With classical computers and the classical internet, we are always manipulating classical information, made of bits. On the other hand, quantum computing and quantum communication consist in the processing of quantum information, made of qubits.

Take away the hardware, and all quantum computers work the same way, through the clever manipulation of quantum information and entanglement. This course provides a deeper understanding of some of the topics covered in our Quantum 101 program, namely, the representation and manipulation of quantum information at the level of abstract quantum circuits. Specifically, single and multi-qubit gates and circuits are introduced, and basic algorithms and protocols such as quantum state teleportation, superdense coding, and entanglement swapping are discussed. The course also presents quantum gate sets, their universality, and compilations between different gate expressions. These concepts are then made concrete with the Quantum Inspire simulator (a cloud-based quantum computing platform, created and maintained by QuTech at TU Delft), and the physics and operations with spin qubits will be detailed. The course concludes with an examination of quantum supremacy and near-term quantum devices, also known as "noisy-intermediate scale" (NISQ) quantum computing.

The course is a journey of discovery, so we encourage you to bring your own experiences, insights and thoughts to discuss on the forum!

This course is authored by experts from the QuTech research center at Delft University of Technology. In the center, scientists and engineers work together to drive research and development in quantum technology. QuTech Academy's aim is to inspire, share and disseminate knowledge about the latest developments in quantum technology.

Global Housing Design

Building adequate housing is a pressing issue worldwide. With close to a billion people currently living in slums, accommodating a growing population, and improving dwelling conditions is a critical issue for society.

This challenge cannot be solved with a one-size-fits-all approach. Every city, region and country demand their own housing models and prototypes. That’s why housing design needs to negotiate many aspects simultaneously to achieve sustainable urban environments and inclusive dwelling communities.

This course uncovers how social, economic and environmental factors are interrelated in the design of housing settlements. For this, the course dives into three key aspects that anyone involved in housing design should take into consideration: time, environment, and community. Each of these aspects will be examined through a specific design approach, respectively:

Incrementality: how dwelling environments should be able to accommodate growth and change through time.
Typology Mix: how design can be responsive to different patterns of inhabitation, aspirations and cultural backgrounds, creating inclusive dwelling environments.
Clustering: what methods and strategies can shape the association of dwelling units in order to create meaningful communities.
