This article, part of Biodiversity Counts, provides insight into what it takes to maintain an arthropod collection. The article contains advice to students for setting up and maintaining a small-scale collection, including what tools are needed, safe alternatives to chemicals for killing and preserving specimens and some of the techniques the museum uses to protect specimens that students may want to adopt.

This OLogy activity provides insight into the phases of the Moon and why it looks a little different each night. The activity begins with an explanation about how the Moon itself doesn't really change, just our view of it. Then kids go to "See the Moon in Action," an interactive illustration of the Moon's orbit around the Earth, in which they can see what the Moon looks like from Earth at eight different positions in its orbit. The activity ends with a Moon Watch Log, a printable PDF file, that kids use to observe the Moon for 28 nights and then compile their illustrations into a flipbook.

Meet the Earth OLogists is part of OLogy, where kids can collect virtual trading cards and create projects with them. Here, they meet three kids and one scientist who are all fascinated by rocks: Arjun, a nine-year-old from Ohio who has visited his favorite volcano, Mount St. Helens in Washington State. Diana, a seven-year-old from New Hampshire who has hundreds of rocks in her collection. Ruthmabel, an eight-year-old from Washington State who built a Mars rover model at rocket camp and a model volcano at geology camp. Ed Mathez, a curator of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Museum, who answers kids questions, including "How do kids start a rock collection?" and "What do you want every kid to know about the Earth?"

This fun Web site is part of OLogy, where kids can collect virtual trading cards and create projects with them. Here, they are introduced to gravity and the scope of its influence. The site has three sections:What Does Gravity Do?, an illustrated look at how gravity affects everything in the universe. What Would Happen if the Force of Gravity Were Turned Off?, a thought experiment that asks students to imagine a world without gravity's influence. A Closer Look at Mars, an introduction to Earth's closest neighbor, which has less gravity.

This OLogy activity explores the symbolic and archaeological importance of coins. The activity opens by introducing kids to the elements of coins: dates, names, images, mottoes, and materials. Then, kids are given step-by-step illustrated directions for designing a coin. The activity includes a Global Coin Collection, a printable PDF handout with photographs of coins from 14 countries, and an introduction to the kid who has collected these coins.

In this Digital Universe activity, students learn about observation, representation, perspective, and modeling by working up from two-dimensional perspective drawings to constructing and examining three-dimensional models. The printable PDF activity includes illustrated step-by-step instructions for the following hands-on and computer-assisted activities: Rendering Perspective in Two Dimensions and Creating a Three-Dimensional View. The American Museum of Natural History‰'s ‰"Digital Universe" program, including the Partiview software and Milky Way Atlas data set are needed for this activity and can be downloaded.

This online directory focuses on national parks throughout the country that offer educational opportunities. Where possible, it includes the following information for each: the type of support offered, including educational materials, access to a naturalist or specialists, and classes/workshops; and mailing address and contact information. In addition, a link to the National Park Service's Web site is included.

For each resource, contact information, including a link to its Web site, is provided. The list is contains general resources and is also organized by geographic region.

This online database of our North American Ethnographic collection includes artifacts from every Native American cultural region in North America, from Achomawi and Acoma to Zia and Zuni. The database allows you to see all artifacts for a specific culture, search by object type, material, locale, and donor, find out what items are currently on display and learn about recently acquired artifacts. There are two ways to search the collection as a picture-only gallery, or as a catalog that describes each artifact's provenance (country, locale, culture), materials, dimensions, and year of acquisition.
