Students will use their knowledge of geometric shapes to find real world examples outdoors.
In this engaging unit, students will design and plant a square-foot garden that will be their central tool. Through the growing season, they will explore nutrition content in their everyday lives and see how it relates to what they are growing.

STUDENT ACTIVITY - 3rd - GA/TXThis is a distance-learning lesson students can complete at home. Students will measure plants and create bar graphs to compare data to actual mature plant heights. This activity was created by Out Teach (out-teach.org), a nonprofit providing outdoor experiential learning to transform Science education for students in under-served communities.
Students will measure plants and create bar graphs to compare data to actual mature plant heights.
As a culminating activity for the Grade 4 Out Teach lessons, students collect data in their outdoor space and create a frequency table and bar graph. Then, students apply their frequency table and graphing skills as they begin to collect data centered around their crafted Healthy Choice Plan for School and Home. Students create a frequency table and bar graphs to help monitor their healthy choice behaviors.
Students will observe various aspects of the outdoor classroom to experience the way birds, insects, and objects interact with gravity.
In this lesson, students will observe, compare different objects, and be able to identify the properties of specific materials.
Students will read the provided complex text about habitat in the outdoor classroom and explore the area to make connections to the content in the text.

STUDENT ACTIVITY - 4th- GAThis is a distance-learning lesson students can complete at home. The student will read the provided text about habitats in the outdoor classroom and explore their area to make connections to the details in the text and draw inferences from the text. Then the student will write about how they could improve the habitat for the organisms living there. This activity was created by Out Teach (out-teach.org), a nonprofit providing outdoor experiential learning to transform Science education for students in under-served communities.
Students will use the short, informational text provided to guide them in examining the animal and insect habitats in their outdoor classroom. They will then be able to use their experience to summarize the information from the text.
Students research healthy benefits of nutritional foods using nonfiction text and the Healthy Me! graphic organizer. Students then share their research findings using the Jigsaw cooperative learning strategy. As a formative assessment, students construct an exit ticket response regarding the health benefits of a favorite healthy food.
Students investigate how the major body systems (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, muscular, skeletal, and nervous) function during a traditional childhood tag game. As a culminating activity for the 5th grade Passport Lessons, students engage in project-based learning (PBL) to create a Healthy Living Plan and share research findings regarding the benefits of eating healthy foods and vegetables on the major body systems.
Students will experiment with different areas of the garden that absorb heat from the sun the best.
Students will explore the outdoor classroom for natural examples of heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation.
