This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Antibiotic resistance is a growing public health problem. By the year 2050, more than 10 million people are expected to die from resistant infections. How are researchers tackling that problem? One team is looking at the gut bacteria found in migratory birds. Migratory birds acquire and spread antibacterial resistance genes from their environment with the gut microbiome, serving as a reservoir for these insidious genes. To understand the role of the gut microbiome, researchers gathered fecal samples from migratory birds and their favorite landing spots in China. Genetic analysis revealed 1030 distinct genes conferring resistance to antibiotics including tetracycline, aminoglycoside, β-lactam, and sulfonamide. While the microbes detected in the guts of birds were less diverse than those found in their surroundings, birds carried a greater number of antibiotic resistance genes..."

Portraits

Short Description:
Portraits d'hommes et de femmes issues d'un pays d'Afrique subsaharienne vivant dans la ville de Québec, réalisés par des étudiants et étudiantes de l'Université Laval.

Long Description:

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Bladder cancer is the 10th most frequent malignancy in the world. Despite the availability of several treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, outcomes for patients with bladder cancer remain poor. Fortunately, a growing understanding of the molecular origins of the disease is revealing new targets for treatment. Among the most promising are a family of enzymes called tyrosine kinases. Tyrosine kinases modify the structure and function of tyrosine-containing proteins. This action helps regulate cellular processes such as growth, migration, differentiation, and metabolism. Dysregulation of tyrosine kinases is part of the pathway that leads to signs and symptoms of bladder cancer. Abnormal tyrosine kinase function can be caused by mutations, amplification, and chromosomal abnormalities. Ongoing studies are discovering how tyrosine kinases can serve as early markers of bladder cancer and how they might be manipulated to stop the progression of bladder tumors..."

Throughout history, as the concepts of empire and nation-states took hold, individual countries secured their borders and tried to keep unwanted migrants out. As we enter the 21st century Anwarul K. Chowdhury, an Under-Secretary of the United Nations, says, 'The first step towards examining the road to peace should start with an appreciation of the changing nature of conflicts. Gone are days of war between states for conquest, extension of spheres of influence in the name of ideology ... Today's wars are about settling border disputes....' In these lessons students confront that issue. Students begin by discussing why people cross borders and the rights people have when they enter another country. Students will discover the factors that determine the location of borders through the examination of maps, cartoons, and primary source documents. After completing this introductory activity, students will analyze a chart comparing the economic situation in the neighboring countries of Zimbabwe and Botswana, and predict what economic problems each country has. They will then view segments of the WIDE ANGLE film 'Border Jumpers' (2005) to understand why these economic problems exist, develop further arguments for those streaming into Botswana from Zimbabwe and for those in Botswana itself, and compare them to their own predictions. As a culminating activity, students will work in groups to develop a presentation for a simulation of the 17th Annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum. Their presentations will be shared with their classmates, and, if desired, sent to the United Nations.

The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Lung cancer and breast cancer are the two most common types of cancer worldwide. Despite abundant research, the detailed molecular mechanisms behind their progression have remained elusive. A recent study uncovered a key signaling pathway underlying lung and breast cancer development. Receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a ubiquitous transmembrane receptor that is upregulated in inflammatory conditions. One of its ligands, lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), is a biologically active phospholipid involved in atherosclerosis, inflammation, diabetes, and cancer. Although these proteins are known to contribute together to other types of cancer, their role in lung and breast cancer has remained unknown. Using in vitro and in vivo mouse studies to evaluate markers of tumor development and progression, researchers found that signaling through RAGE via LPA increased the proliferation, migration, and invasion of lung and breast cancer cells..."

The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women worldwide. While early diagnosis and treatment have improved, recurring cancer is difficult to control, resulting in a poor survival rate. A recent study focused on better understanding the role of a hormone signaling component in breast cancer progression. Progesterone receptor membrane component 1 (Pgrmc1) is a non-classical progesterone receptor with diverse roles in metabolism and steroidogenesis. Using a mouse model of breast cancer, researchers examined tumor development and lung metastasis in mice with or without Pgrmc1. They found that while silencing Pgrmc1 did not affect tumor size at 13 weeks, mice lacking Pgrmc1 survived significantly longer than wild-type mice. Mice without Pgrmc1 also exhibited a lower degree of lung metastasis and lower expression of migration and metastasis markers and in breast cancer cell lines, silencing Pgrmc1 reduced the migration rate..."

How are migrants portrayed in the news and media? Who gets to tell the story of migration, and what aspects of the story tend to go underreported? How do these stories, and the perspectives from which they’re told, impact our own perceptions of migration?
In this unit, students learn to identify underreported stories of migration, and what is missing from mainstream media representations of migrants’ experiences. They analyze nonfiction texts and images, practice identifying perspectives in media, and synthesize their learning to form a new understanding of migration. In their final project, students communicate how their perspective on migration has grown or changed through a creative project, original news story, or existing news story edited to provide a more holistic picture of migration.
