The Harvard Kymograph with stimulator is a piece of equipment that enables the recording of contractions of muscles from isolated issue preparations. In order to obtain the best results, suitable adjustment for the preparations should be made. This video demonstrates all possible adjustments that can be made for the best results. The apparatus also enables the worker to treat an isolated tissue preparation with drugs and to record some form of biological activity. This module has been internally reviewed by a cross-disciplinary committee within KNUST prior to releasing as an Open Educational Resource.

Students learn how engineering design is applied to solve healthcare problems by using an engineering tool called simulation. While engineering design is commonly used to study and design everything from bridges, factories, airports to space shuttles, the use of engineering design to study healthcare administration and delivery is a relatively new concept.

Students learn about providing healthcare in a global setting and the importance of wearing protective equipment when treating patients with infectious diseases like Ebola. They learn about biohazard suits, heat transfer through conduction and convection and the engineering design cycle. Student teams design, create and test (and improve) their own Ebola biohazard suit prototypes that cover one arm and hand, including a ventilation system to cool the inside of the suit.

This unit focuses on teaching students about the many aspects of biomedical engineering (BME). Students come to see that BME is a broad field that relies on concepts from many engineering disciplines. They also begin to understand some of the special considerations that must be made when dealing with the human body. Activities and class discussions encourage students to think as engineers to come up with their own solutions to some of medical challenges that have been solved throughout the history of BME. Class time iincludes brainstorming and presenting ideas to the class for discussion. Specific activities include examination of the material properties and functions of surgical instruments and prosthetics, a simulation of the training experience of a surgical resident, and an investigation of the properties of fluid flow in vascular tissue.

Swiss survey reveals opportunities, challenges in caring for patients choosing VSED

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Voluntary stopping of eating and drinking, or VSED, is one way people around the world choose to end their life prematurely. It’s a conscious choice most often made to end unbearable suffering that cannot be alleviated by modern medicine. In Switzerland, VSED has entered the collective consciousness of healthcare professionals. In 2018, the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences included the practice as part of its guidelines on “Dealing with Dying and Death”. Even so, the depth of the issue across the nation is largely unknown. How many deaths does VSED account for annually? How do healthcare professionals view the practice of VSED? A recent survey of heads of Swiss nursing homes set out to answer these and other questions. The results suggest ample room for improvement in how VSED is understood and managed..."

e-CohortE: A French solution to genetic data ownership

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Genetic testing companies hold data for tens of millions of consumers who have paid, online, for genetic information, without consulting a doctor. This information encodes more than just ancestry; it also captures aspects of wellbeing as well as traits or predispositions for which test quality is often poor. These private companies are strictly prohibited in France. But that hasn’t stopped French research teams from working with them, or French people from paying for illegal tests over the Internet. So how can France keep control over its own genetic data? Our solution is e-CohortE. Designed to achieve the same ends sought by genetic testing companies, but legally and more effectively, e-CohortEs would correspond to a specific and legal French research protocol of RIPH. RIPH sponsors currently address only a few questions on a single topic and then terminate a cohort..."

The oral microbiome, pancreatic cancer, and human diversity in the age of precision medicine

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Advancements in next-generation sequencing have opened the door to detailed analyses of the human microbiome. This technique has many applications, and pancreatic cancer research is one of them. Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease with an estimated 5-year survival rate of only 11%. Most cases, over 80%, are not found until the cancer is too advanced to successfully treat, but pancreatic cancer patients show shifts in their oral microbiome, which could be detected years earlier than current methods allow. Pathogenic oral bacteria have also been found within pancreatic tumors, which is another potential link between them. However, these findings barely scratch the surface of how the oral microbiome relates to pancreatic cancer. The oral microbiome is influenced by a combination of host-related and environmental factors, which include genetics, race, ethnicity, smoking, socioeconomics, and age..."
