Knowing the fund structure for state and local governments is a key concept students must master early in their study of governmental accounting. In addition, students must be able to identify which fund would be used to account for various activities in which a government engages. This PowerPoint game is a drill and practice/review activity fashioned after the popular TV game show, Hollywood Squares. The celebrities in the Fund Identification Challenge are past Presidents of the United States. The Presidents have responded to a question, and the game participants either agree or disagree with the response to earn the square. The 27 real-world examples found in the game were derived by examining the Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports (CAFR) of various cities.

The globalization of the competitive landscape has forced companies to fundamentally rethink their strategies. As a consequence, creating a global competitive advantage has become a key strategic issue for many companies, and students need to possess an understanding of the impact of global strategies on a business.

The histories of information, communication, and computing technologies have attracted attention from scholars across a variety of disciplines. This course introduces students to prominent voices in these topics across fields. Alongside readings introducing students to this broad scholarly terrain, the course offers guidance in research and writing for publication based on the reality that PhD candidates on the job market need to be published authors, and that every term paper has the potential to be a journal article. We work towards publication by reading widely-cited scholarly histories both for their content and for what they can tell us about scholarly craft.

This film chronicles the introduction of the hula hoop, a toy that set off one of the greatest fads in United States history. According to Wham-O, the manufacturer of the hoop, when the toy was first introduced in the late 1950s, over 25 million were sold in four months. This short scene illustrates the difference between a movement along a demand curve and a shift of the entire curve, a subtle point that many students struggle with.

Human Resource Management teaches HRM strategies and theories that any manager—not just those in HR—needs to know about recruiting, selecting, training, and compensating people.
Most students will be managing people at some point in their careers and not necessarily in a human resource management capacity. As businesses cut back, they may outsource HR duties to outside vendors. Or, in smaller businesses, the HR department is sometimes small or non-existent, and managers from other departments have to perform their own HRM. Therefore, teaching HRM from the perspective of a general manager, in addition to an HR manager, provides more relevance to students' careers and will give them a competitive advantage in the workplace.
This text also provides practical applications of theory relevant to today's workplace. You won't find discussions about “posting vacancies on a job board” or “sending memos.” In the real world, HRM leverages technology in every aspect of the job—from online training modules to technology for better managing flex-time workers and telecommuters.
Consider how most companies have gone “paperless” with pay stubs by using software. While such technology has made HRM easier, it has also created a new set of challenges. For example, how does a manager actually implement a new pay system? Therefore, it's important for students to understand what kinds of platforms exist in today's workplace to enhance their effectiveness as future managers.
The conversational style of Human Resource Management engages students, while the academic rigor of its content provides them with the tools that any manager needs—whether they work in HR or a different department. PLUS it offers an array of supplements that gives them practice creating real HR documents and role-playing real HR scenarios. Add value to your students' education, enhance the relevance of your curriculum, and make your students more employable by adopting this book for your HRM class. Read it now online today!

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:
"A company's economic performance varies over time But a company's executives can use earnings management to reduce the variability of reported earnings - a common measure of economic performance This process, known as “income smoothing,” has been debated by regulators and researchers Some worry that executives may use income smoothing to mask poor economic performance Others argue that income smoothing allows executives to report earnings that better reflect the company’s true ongoing performance A new study examines how income smoothing impacts debt contract design and financial covenant effectiveness to provide evidence on these issues The study finds that debt contracts to borrowers who smooth income are more likely to include an earnings-based debt covenant And income smoothers are less likely to experience a spurious covenant violation, where a debt covenant is violated even though credit risk has not increased These findings suggest that smoothed earnings are more useful in monitor.."

An organization’s culture includes the assumptions, symbols, organizational beliefs, routines, and shared language that influence how people behave and make sense of their experiences within the organization. The culture of an organization is linked to all facets of the people, processes, and technology that make up a functioning organization. Training and development is an important tool and helps to define organizational culture. The organizational knowledge base serves as a foundational resource for the entire training strategy as it allows the organization to be adaptable, responsive, and in alignment with the core values and mission. Knowledge creation enables the organization to refine and develop new content as well as find better, more effective ways to do tasks. Knowledge sharing refers to the social interactions between key stakeholders that allow for the transactional and transformation exchange of organizational experiences, implicit and explicit knowledge, thoughts, and suggestions. Knowledge storage enhances organizational memory and promotes access to and use of information for decision making. Learning and finding appropriate ways to use knowledge within our organizational roles for different activities and problem-solving situations is one of the primary goals of training and development areas. How we choose to train and develop team members will be heavily influenced by the organizational culture. Consider the following example.
