Material Type: Lecture
In this Cyberchase video segment, Bianca drives to visit her friend, but learns that she has incorrectly added decimal amounts, so she ends up at the wrong location. ***Access to Teacher's Domain content now requires free login to PBS Learning Media.
Material Type: Lecture
The CyberSquad adds decimals to figure out how many rails they need to build a detour that will help them go around a mountain in this Cyberchase video segment. ***Access to Teacher's Domain content now requires free login to PBS Learning Media.
Material Type: Lecture
These games support student development of spatial sense and foster familiarity with the mathematical vocabulary of geometry.
Material Type: Game
These games support student development of the concept of ordered pairs as they play to win each game.
Material Type: Activity/Lab, Game
Introduce elementary students to the concept of functions by investigating growing patterns. Visual patterns formed with manipulatives are especially effective for elementary students and allow them to concretely build understanding as they first reproduce, then extend the pattern to the next couple of stages.
Material Type: Activity/Lab, Teaching/Learning Strategy
An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the area of a square. The applet shows a square with all vertices draggable. As you drag any one, the area id continuously calculated and shown on the applet. The square is filled with a unit grid to allow class estimation of area. The displayed calculation can be turned off. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.
Material Type: Reading, Simulation
A web page and interactive applet showing the ways to calculate the area of a rectangle. The user can drag the vertices of the rectangle and the other points change automatically to ensure it remains a rectangle. A grid inside the shape allows students to estimate the area visually, then check against the actual computed area. The text on the page gives three different ways to calculate the area with a formula for each. The applet uses one of the methods to compute the area in real time, so it changes as the rectangle is reshaped with the mouse. A companion page is http://www.mathopenref.com/rectangle.html showing the definition and properties of a rectangle Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. You get the general idea of decimal is and what the digits in different places represent (place value). Now you're ready to do something with the decimals. Adding and subtracting is a good place to start. This will allow you to add your family's expenses to figure out if your little brother is laundering money (perhaps literally). Have fun! Common Core Standard: 5.NBT.B.7

The real world is seldom about whole numbers. If you precisely measure anything, you're likely to get a decimal. If you don't know how to multiply these decimals, then you won't be able to do all the powerful things that multiplication can do in the real world (figure out your commission as a robot possum salesperson, determining how much shag carpet you need for your secret lair, etc.).
